I gave notice at my new job. Only been here two weeks, like it quite a bit, but an offer came through from my earlier job hunt that I couldn't turn down. What I really wanted was something fully remote, for flexibility as my wife is looking for new jobs as she finishes up her PhD, and for flexibility because I have a lot of friends and family I'd spend a weekend with except they live a half or day's drive away. Something fully remote I can go visit them for a week instead, working but get a full weekend in with them. Also, developing open source web platforms. Couldn't pass it up. In a surprise move, new old boss asked me for more weeks of notice than I expected. We compromised, I really like these guys too, hope they do well. But not enough to stay.
Haven't seen live music in too long, a disappointing stretch of nobody I'm interested in seeing at any of our nearby favorite venues. Was a little wary of this venue (Lincoln Hall, a new medium-sized space by the owners of Schubas) from a previous experience of non-dancing crowd, but went out on a limb to see Tea Leaf Green. Opening act Ha Ha Tonka was also good, I think maybe I just drank enough tequila to not mind the audience. Had good friends along to help.
Saturday
A slow day, tiptoeing around the edge of a hangover. Got my media computer back to working - I'm afraid the "Missing Operating System" message this time was that somehow one of my external usb drives had gotten into the boot order. Getting rusty. Posted the last of the honeymoon photos to the social internet, now I can get back to posting pictures of food.
One of my christmas gifts from the inlaws was a pasta maker (hefty steel roller dealy), just unwrapped it earlier in the week but had a variety of leftover cheeses so grabbed some chorizo and made a very decent lasagna. Set a few more sourdough projects in motion for the next day: sandwich bread and waffles.
Watched "Sin Nombre" on Netflix, really incredibly depressing movie set in modern day Mexico involving migration and drug gangs and hopelessness. Nearly as depressing as "Biutiful".
Sunday
The sandwich bread was over-risen by the time I got up at 7am to bake, but not a complete loss. The waffles were outstanding. Wife and I had blocked the day off for enjoying the city, so we took a walk down the lakeshore in the snow.
Lots of runners out, it was starting to push above freezing - by the end of the day all the snow would be gone again. It's about 3 miles to Lincoln Park for us, decided to see the Nature Museum for the first time. Nice interactive kids exhibits on waterways (rivers, flooding, agricultural run-off) and regional swamps, marshes etc. A stuffed polar bear. A nice "green house" exhibit, frankly better than the Museum of Science and Industry "House of the Future". A warm and colorful butterfly house.
Rode the bus back up Broadway to a book store (bought a Philip K Dick novel, wrote down five other titles I should probably get from the library when I get through my current stack) and sushi for an early dinner.
Peace.
