As some of you know, I work in a neurologist's office.  This morning, a lady brought in some MRI reports and disk with some films on it - not of herself, but of her son.

Her son, she explained, lives in Canada, where he is being followed by local neurologists for a mysterious, possibly benign lesion that was found on a brain MRI a year or so ago.  Since its discovery, he has been having periodic scans every 6 months to monitor the lesion for any changes.

Apparently, on his most recent neurology visit, he had a terrible panic attack about the matter, because his grandmother had died, not long ago, of a brain aneurysm. His mother, who lives here in San Francisco, asked her local internist what she could do to reassure her son, and he suggested that her son get a second opinion. He gave her my boss' name and suggested checking in with him.

So she came into our office this morning, MRI records in hand, explaining the situation. She spoke with my boss directly, who told her that he didn't feel comfortable getting involved, without being able to consult with the patient directly, and he referred her to our hospital radiology department because, as he explained, a neuroradiologist would be a better choice anyway to interpret the MRI scans. As he headed back down the hall to his office, I began to give the lady directions on how to get to the hospital radiology department.

"Never mind," she said dismissively. "I'll just lie to my son and tell him the doctor said everything is fine." Her casual, nonchalant tone about it gave me the impression that this was something she does regularly. I thought to myself: no wonder he's paranoid.
