Holy Shit.

I could play with this unit all night long.  It allows me to download Geocaches ( but just 5 a day ).  It allows me to ad my own custom vehicle.

It's also a big ass hard drive and stores pictures.  It has a microSD slot.  It charges and does data via a mini-USB.  Which means I can charge it in my car, on my PC, or thru the wall as most of my devices uses mini-USB.

Oh Nuvi 1100, you surely do rock.

Sadly after buying a USB wireless adapter because I could not get my laptop's internal adapter to see a AP at all ( 2 separate units at home, a friend's place, and a public hotspot) in Linux or Windows, I discover that I hadn't had the right pieces of software installed in Gentoo and now the internal works again.  But just for Gentoo.  Thus I'm not returning it because I'll need Windows access wirelessly at some point and that's still broken.

The myGarmin software was a Firefox extension so that was easy.

I have a headache.  Started around 4PM.  I think I've been sleeping wrong, and the neck is all outta whack.

This is not good, been getting to bed around midnight all week.  I really need to be up as early as possible on Saturday for my trip to Virginia.

I think I've been working. I'm fairly sure that that used to be synonymous with HuSi posting, but it seems somehow I lost my way.

I shall have to educate you all on the recent EXCITING GOINGS ON in my life. (they're not exciting)

Wait. Isn't the Nuvi an auto nav system? by ObviousTroll (2.00 / 0) #4 Wed Jul 28, 2010 at 02:33:41 PM EST
Why does it have geocache support?

You don't usually find geocaches on the roads themselves.

I've been tempted to play with a "geocache" bike trip to add something to my rides, but I haven't gotten around to trying it.

yes it is. by dev trash (2.00 / 0) #5 Wed Jul 28, 2010 at 07:01:08 PM EST
It's also fit for walking and hiking.  It has three settings actually, Driving, Walking, and Biking.  The maps change depending on which setting. But yeah it does support caches, it parses the loc files and makes them a customized point of interest.

In fact I was looking thru some of the settings and there are copyright notices for expat ( XML parser ) and Ogg Vorbis ( I assume the voices are in Ogg format ).  If I had another 100 bucks to spend, I'd buy another unit and jailbreak myself a ghetto music player.  It also has a photo viewer and apparently allows you to search for photos on Google Maps and have the unit give you directions to where the photo was geotagged.

Interesting. by ObviousTroll (2.00 / 0) #6 Wed Jul 28, 2010 at 07:57:37 PM EST
Does it record your track/trail as you ride?

Last time I bought a cycling GPS I immediately disregarded Garmin because their cycling line was expensive and didn't even display maps.

it does. by dev trash (2.00 / 0) #7 Wed Jul 28, 2010 at 11:25:42 PM EST
I was confused as to why the 'alley' at work was marked as all kinds of squigly lines, and then I realized it was actually showing where I had walked.  Now, can one get that data off the unit?  Not sure yet, need to play around a bit.

Definitely a better value than their "bicycle" models.

one thing that irks me by dev trash (2.00 / 0) #9 Thu Jul 29, 2010 at 06:42:23 PM EST
Specialization.
Another thing that irks me.  Putting those features in another model quietly.

It's how they hang onto their profits. by ObviousTroll (2.00 / 0) #10 Fri Jul 30, 2010 at 12:17:14 AM EST
I have a suspicion that the raw GPS technology has become really, really cheap over the past few years, so the manufacturers are flailing to find ways to keep the prices up.
