Mexico 2

Lets face it, the Bafana-Bafana are the rubbishest team (in footballing terms, ok?) ever to have being hosts.

I know, I know, I may eat my words in 12 hours time, but hey, the world belongs to the bold.

Mexico played the first ever World Cup match, and by extension, the first ever in the American Continent.

Funnily enough we played the first World Cup game in Europe as well.

Well, not quite.

The US and Mexico travelled all the way to Rome to play an elimination game for the competition proper, so although is not officially part of the final event, it quacks as a duck, walks as a duck and I say it is a duck. News that the Fascist government bribed the referee to ensure the US won are greatly exaggerated, the US had a great team that actually reached the semifinals 4 years earlier.

English fans may want to know that the US won 3-2...

And now we are playing the first ever WC game in Africa.

It is an honour and the team is good enough to make it a memorable occasion, Arsenal and Tottenham fans will wonder why their Mexican players are sitting in the bench instead of being regulars in their respective teams.

The group of Mexican lads has several of the players that won the U17 world cup a few years ago, so the winning mentality is there.

As for the "bubuzelas" that are so much annoying the UK sports commentators, we have had those trumpets in Mexico since forever. The Azteca stadium regularly has thousands of these during "clasicos" (derbies). So no annoyance there.

Altitude? Athletes go to Mexico City for altitude training. Enough said.

I just hope South Africa does not lose heart if they don't do well today. Tomorrow is another day and "Les Blues" are not the force they used to be (they just lost against China. China!) and the Uruguayans are very unpredictable.

Enough footie for now!

The Brazilian coach has turned SA into a much harder team to beat.
Mexico should win but I think it will be 1-0 and maybe squeaky bum time before the end...

Grosso and Del Piero turning on the style and knocking those reprobates out with two minutes left on the clock ...

Still brings a smile to my face.

about hearing a mariachi band in the background of an interview with several South African fans...their accents making that music sound completely out of place. I loved it.

I really don't care about this game. by aphrael (2.00 / 0) #13 Thu Jun 17, 2010 at 01:54:24 PM EST
South Africa can theoretically advance no matter who wins this game, as long as they beat France and Mexico loses to Uruguay.

So I suppose I should cheer for Mexico out of Concacaf brotherhood.

Most unlikely now. by Tonatiuh (2.00 / 0) #14 Fri Jun 18, 2010 at 07:41:01 AM EST
There is a goal difference of 5 between both teams (Mexico +2, South Africa -3).

So the combined goal tally of hypotetical Mexican defeat and South African victory would need to be at least 5, just to get even (Mexico losing by 1, South Africa winning by 4, or any other combination, all of them frankly unlikely), and then you would need to go to the most goals scored, in which Mexico already has an advantage of +2.

As for Uruguay losing, I don't know what the tie break rules are (they are changed at a whim), in previous WCs the direct match between tied teams was the deciding factor, in which case South Africa would be out anyway, and even if we were back to goal difference the case of SA aginst Uruguay is even worst than in respect to Mexico.

France has a similar conondrum, although in a good day they could actually score 3 or 4 against South Africa, so Uruguay should be the most worried of the two on top.
