the better homes and gardens meat cookbook.

my mother made recipes out of it all the time. i remember always having to go and fetch it so we could look up how long to cook and what to stuff into whatever beast we were roasting for each holiday.

i wonder if growing up and becoming vegetarian has anything to do with how often i read that cookbook before meaty dinners as a child.

Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Both volumes. Which I inherited from her. First editions. Which would be valuable if they hadn't been used right by the range, splattered with sauces and juices.
