But that's okay, because this is not a body. :-)

So what's been up lately?

The holidays came and went. We stayed here this year. The one nephew on my side of the family who's in college plays in the marching band, and it was thought for a while the football team at his university might be playing in a bowl game between Christmas and New Years', and that he'd be playing at halftime. It's happened before. This year, the game was a lesser bowl played before Christmas, and presumably it paid less so they took only a subset of the band (not including M). By the time they had that all sorted out, we'd made plans to get together at my folks' house over Spring Break in March (which, miraculously, M, my brother J who's a professor, and E's kids who are in grade school, all have the same week).

So, we stayed home. It was quiet, it was nice. We (read: toxicfur) roasted a duck, with comfort-food side dishes (asparagus casserole and stuffing made with oysters). Really yummy. And about the right amount of food for the two of us to finish in 2-3 meals.

Cool stuff that my true love gave to me includes a Navy bridgecoat (I've always regretted I didn't buy one when I was actually in the Navy); the book Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel (a historical novel centered on Thomas Cromwell, henchman of Henry VIII), a new office sweater, a stuffed, one-foot-diameter hippopotamus (Haruuugh!); a macro lens for my DSLR camera, ...

Swag going the other way included comics (Absolute Death and vol 3 of Freakangels) and the Wii Sports Resort game, which is fun. The little cubic-inch size extensions for the wiimotes seem to make them pick up subtle motions more reliably (so the golf game sucks much less).

Hm. They moved my mailbox. The room's empty now. Wonder where they put it?

I think maybe I need to get my glasses prescription adjusted. Reading is hard, at least for long periods. Maybe some reading glasses. Getting old sucks. You kids get off my lawn. What? That's a dog, you say? Oh, Fog.

I spent some of the break writing; not as much as I'd anticipated. I think I need to take another run at the novel-in-rewrite at some point. A side plot that's a kind of murder mystery seems to have developed; perhaps because I've been watching too much Castle lately.

But I finally put together an old character blog i wrote from 2003 through 2008 or so so that it can be put into book form at Lulu.com. Not sure what to do about cover art. I think I have most of the typos fixed, and the other typographical issues (like typesetting poetry, for example). Scrivener is both a life saver and sometimes exasperating, like any piece of software that's worth anything. The diary itself was a hoot to write, and it won for me the love of my life. But it's a chapter that's now mostly closed.

Perhaps I should sign up for a twitter ID to go with this persona. And/or a facebook account to go with that other one.

So this year I really kinda need to buckle down a bit more at work. Sometimes I'm really busy, get stuff done, etc. Sometimes I pause for inspiration, and sometimes the ideas I get that way are good ones. Other times when I'm looking out the window, I'm just watching the world go by. There's a balance point there someplace, I'm sure.

My body is slowly getting less achey, after the snow shoveling we did at the weekend. (or snovling show, as I like to say, in part because that coinage is close to 'sniveling' which is one of my favorite adjectives). It's one of those exercise-like activities I either need to to more often or not at all. I'll vote for the latter, kthxbye.

I'm off to hunt for my mailbox. Wish me luck.

Reading glasses by wiredog (2.00 / 0) #6 Fri Jan 08, 2010 at 12:57:31 PM EST
Got mine a couple years ago. Next step: Bifocals.

I have bifocals by ana (2.00 / 0) #7 Fri Jan 08, 2010 at 01:10:17 PM EST
Well, the continuously variable ones. The trouble is often that there's a thumbprint in the one cm2 I need to look through to see something in focus. Or dog slobber, cat fur, etc.

That, and the reading prescription isn't quite right anyway.
