and trying to avoid too much of it.

Getting settled in since the big move has been fun for the most part.  Unfortunately the two days immediately after moving, which also happened to be New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, were not fun, since I came down with a nasty cold, and couldn't do much more than struggle to sleep, alternately sweat and shiver, and sit around staring at the walls or TV.

Thankfully I got better just in time for my friend Sarah's wedding Saturday morning all the way up north of IAH, take some fun pictures for her (I was not the official photographer; I was just doing some supplemental fun candid stuff), and then take advantage of being up there to go to some furniture stores in the area, including the big famous one in Houston which used to have a bowl game named after it.  Got some ideas.  Hard to find something exactly right style-wise and in the right color.  I'm shopping in the contemporary zone and so much of that stuff is white or cream colored, which would look beautiful in my place, but only for about two weeks.  I should be able to get some custom-ordered, but that will delay things considerably.

Yesterday I did what I hope is the final cleaning of my old apartment, but the rent is paid through the end of the month and I still don't have keys to my new mailbox, so I'm going to hang on to the keys just so I can check my mail until I can set up the forwarding.  Then I did some cleaning and organizing to make the house presentable enough for my first "official guest", my friend Cristen who came over for dinner, the house tour, and to witness me test-driving my fireplace with a Duraflame log.  It's wonderfully beautiful already and hopefully will be even nicer once I have real furniture in there.

So, I feel like I'm getting nicely settled into the house, but I need to avoid getting too settled.  There's still a lot of painting to be done and furniture to be acquired, and I'd like to avoid my parents' habit of letting these projects drag on for years at a time.

Wishes do come true sometimes: Jonathan Coulton and Paul & Storm will be returning to Houston in less than a year since their last visit - February 6th at Zilkha Hall.  I just saw them in September at PAX so it's not like I'm going through mega-withdrawl, but I'll never pass up the opportunity to see them live.

It's kinda cool, having a place that's actually your own (well, with the help of a bank someplace).

I get sick every time I move.  I think I'm unwittingly moving and exposing myself to some sort of biotoxins.
