I was at Creswell Crags at the weekend, for the opening of the new visitor centre.

Creswell is notable as the only known site in the UK that has Ice Age cave art.

It's also the site that a carved rib bone was found at. 12,500 years old, it's the only example discovered in this country so far. It was in the visitor centre, so I snapped a picture of it.

The lighting was really good, and it came out really well.

It's worth clicking through and seeing the full size version. The detail is remarkable. The score marks on the top of the bone are the mane.

Paul Pettitt, one of the people who discovered the cave art was of J's lecturer's, and he was there at the weekend. Along with Paul Bahn, who was one of the other people who discovered the cave art.

Sir David Attenborough opened the new centre. T'was an interesting day.

J got her results today. Not only has she got a first, she's also got a prize for being joint top of her year for the Archaeolgical Science degree.

The whole thing sounds like quite the fancy affair.

You can build the most elegant fountain in the world, but eventually a winged rat will be using it as a drinking bowl.

from watching Indiana Jones..

So, erm, to the unwashed masses such as myself, wtf makes that "carved" bone ? My 2 year old colors like the "carvings" on that bone ..

What makes it carved bone by hulver (4.00 / 3) #5 Wed Jul 01, 2009 at 11:12:49 AM EST
Is the shape of a horse carved into it.

Maybe it's one of those things that once you see it, you can't stop seeing it, but the horse head shape really stands out for me.

I've highlighted a main features on this image.

well done.

It was an unholy union of text and pulped wood that the Ancients used to distribute their blogs.
