Good fun - what are you expecting

Jason Statham is excellent as the wrongly convicted man struggling against the inhumanity of the system but this film isn't a commentary on the modern correctional system or reality TV. This is out and out action.

Prison provides plenty of opportunity for Statham to beat seven shades out of a host of badguys, after that is, he has beaten up a few riot police. The races are high octane and overly aggressive. Things explode, gadgets the Mario brothers would be proud of foil other vehicles, cars smash and mayhem ensues. In places it's grizzly but it's not too excessive. If you love action films then this is a superlative version. It's far fetched but I don't think there's anything actually physically impossible going on. The lack of moralizing, naff sentimentality, and faux importance means the action gets to take centre stage and it's done very well.

The cinematography is great with washed out colours and the sets and costumes heavy on greys and browns really give it a grimy used feel. The future is a worn out exhausted place physically and morally.

I actually saw this as a first date movie which I wouldn't recommend but when Jason Statham removes his shirt and does pull ups evidently there is something for the ladies too.

This isn't exactly mindless violence - there is a plot and it makes sense (pretty much) but it is straightforward simple action and adventure. Either you like that or you don't.

Clarkson may like it but ..................?

As soon as you see the films opening you just KNOW that Mr.Muscles STATHAM is going to be up to his old tricks.A quick murder/frame-up and he is banged-up and soon has to take over the driving spot from the injured Supremo, Frankenstein. But he is promised his freedom IF, just IF he wins ONE race for the CROOKED warden (Joan Allen at her most ACID best)but he soon learns who he can and cannot trust. Also stars Ian McShane among others. Problem for Statham now is that he is TYPECAST for this TYPE OF ROLE or a roll involving Karate/taekwando or whatever.

One of the best action films ever!!!!!!

When i first wached this film i thought it was going to be a basic action flim

I WAS VERY WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Driven to Destruction by Comical Rally

The only way I could see someone feeling shortchanged by this film is if they have a special place in their heart for the original Stallone movie. I've never watched it so all I was looking for here were some high octane visceral thrills and a big side order of Wacky Races style cartoon violence. Well, once the first third of the film is out of the way (think of every hip hop prison cliche going) and the movie clicks into gear with the start of the first racing stage proper, `Death Race' delivers both in spades. I particularly enjoyed Stage 2 of the racing where you discover just what the shadowy, rating-chasing race organizers have been developing behind that secret curtain!

Wasn't 100% sure about Ian McShane as the Coach until he brought the old Lovejoy magic with a cheeky trademark aside to camera at the end!

Does what it says on the tin.
