Again, it's been a while, and it seems to be a recurring pattern that I keep coming back here and saying that.

I mentioned in the last diary that I was looking for contract work. I found some, and for the last 3 months have been uniquely funded by some little public broadcasting corporation based in West London. The work is PHP (meh) but the top secret uber-cool project I am working on more than makes up for that.

Since home is 100 miles from work, this does involve certain sacrifices, namely spending my weeknights eating and sleeping in a random crap little London suburb named Perivale which, as I tell anybody who asks "is a bit grotty but will do". The same goes for my room. Being just round the corner from the tube stop, which in turn is a 10 minute ride from work, is the height of convenience. I go home to Dorset at weekends, except for every other weekend when we visit the inlaws in Surrey. I am slightly fed up with the lack of going home, what with home being rather lovely and everything, but that will all change when I finish work at the end of May.

I am still planning on going cycling somewhere awesome after I finish working. I don't know where. I have a couple of ideas in mind but it's nice to be spontaneous about these things. I have a big map of Europe on my wall in Perivale, which helps with the daydreaming.

The hosting business is still growing, slowly but surely. If you are reading this, then our servers are up right now. We are now looking after hulver.com which is a great honour and we are doing our best to take good care of all your stuff. "We" being mostly dgym while I'm contracting. He works on new bits and pieces when he feels like it, gets on with other things the rest of the time, and we both have loud beepy things that tell us when we should be paying attention to important stuff, like new customers or brokenness.

A couple of weeks ago I did something I've been wanting to try for years, and went climbing. My housemate, who regularly goes to the wall at Westway gym, offered to teach me and it was as fun as I always thought it would be. I'll hopefully be taking a beginner course soon so I can learn properly, and also a test thingy so I can quit being such a n00b pain in the arse.

I also just got my first DSLR, a Canon EOS 450D which I am very happy with. Reasons why I like it a lot more than my previous camera (PanasoniC FZ7, a bridge camera) include much less image noise, more intuitive zooming & manual focus controls, being able to shoot RAW, and the fact that it makes a cool noise when I press the button. Dgym, who has little appreciation for fancy cameras, can't get over the fact that it doesn't make videos like my old one.

Dgym and I are off to Paris in a couple of days time to celebrate my birthday, which this year will be a number of absolutely no significance whatsoever. I am trying to fight off teh illz. I have managed to pick up various afflictions just in time for every damn holiday I've taken in the past year.

I applied for a job there.... by Tonatiuh (4.00 / 1) #3 Mon Mar 16, 2009 at 10:05:47 PM EST
... but my salary demands were found "unreasonable" :-)

We could have been colleagues!

Happy birthday and have both a nice time in Paris.

Do you have a button or something that I can put at the bottom of the page? I think a "Hosted by ..." button would be good.

I'm still pondering adverts.

That sounds like a great idea. I will get our marketing department to come up with something. ;-)
