By NoMoreNicksLeft (Tue Nov 17, 2009 at 12:06:59 AM EST) obligatory horsecock, k5 is dead (all tags)
This Firefox tab has been devoted to K5. I do not know why. The 0x000beeguy stories (whether or not they have to do with bees) are always good. Too good in fact, I don't know why he bothers. Even in 2006 or so, it was a dump. Now it reminds me of the gunk you find underneath a toilet when you're changing the wax ring. You're pretty sure it's not a turd, because if it was that it'd smell better.

Blah.

Not that many care, but... I'm a father. As of about 2 months ago. A beautiful baby girl named after my mother.

I'm living in Nashville, we moved here back in April for a job that was supposedly "3 months contract to hire, they always hire if you're good enough to get an offer". It's not November. They haven't hired me, and they've hired plenty of people since... just not me. Lately, there have been hints that I have a bad attitude. Yet, I know of no other possible attitude for jerks that string me along for 8 months.

Tonight I attempted for the third time to make homemade soda... the first attempt was ginger ale (too much yeast because I misread the instructions, was really boozy). The second attempt was lemon-lime (no idea what went wrong, but no carbonation). In the meantime though, my case of root beer extract has arrived. I did not realize that it only needs 1 tablespoon per 2 liter bottle. So, if I make 3 of those per week for the next 10 years, I will have to order another case.

My little peppercorn plant has recovered enough to sprout another leaf... it was touch and go there for awhile. My banana trees are doing well in the kitchen in front of the french doors. Surprised at that, last winter was rough on them. But they are growing a new leaf about every 2 weeks, nearly as fast as summer. I need to get some mulberry trees planted... next summer I'm going to try to raise silkworms. If I get started now, I might just have enough for a wedding dress when my girl turns 18.

What's happening in your lives, and what did I miss?

Even one of your "rap battles" with Jade or Jade or whatever the nick is would be a fucking breath of fresh air at k5. I agree the only reason to really go there anymore is for xC0000005's diaries and an occasional submission.

woof.

Best wishes to the whole family. Good show.

Although K5 is a sewer, I was surprised that when I recently put on my hazardous protection gear and posted a story there about self-publishing, it generated 84 clickthroughs to my site. That's pretty freeking astonishing. My typical HuSi diary gets read by 70 people or so, and generates, sometimes, as many as 45 clickthroughs.

She has effectively checked out. She's an un-person of her own making. So it falls to me.--ad hoc (in the hole)

It also talks about cream soda and root beer on other pages.

Hello by codemonkey uk (2.00 / 0) #6 Tue Nov 17, 2009 at 04:52:20 PM EST
Be warned, some K5 trolls loiter here, and sometimes genuine newbies are mistaken for them.  Don't worry about it though, and you'll be fine.

I'm suspicious by ni (2.00 / 0) #7 Tue Nov 17, 2009 at 06:21:22 PM EST
of the claim that your soda was too boozy because of too much yeast. Seems pretty unlikely to me.

That I don't drink and never have, so what would I know? But there was a taste that was like the smell I associate with alcohol.

Whether or not it was truly boozy, it was undrinkable.

Oh, yeah, by ni (2.00 / 0) #10 Tue Nov 17, 2009 at 07:31:39 PM EST
I'm sure it was boozy (it's always been when I've made it) -- it's the "because of too much yeast" part I have trouble believing.

Well... by NoMoreNicksLeft (2.00 / 0) #11 Wed Nov 18, 2009 at 01:39:52 AM EST
It's winter and the place isn't too warm. And I certainly only let it ferment less than a day before it got stuck in the cold part of the fridge.

And when I say too much, I do mean that I used the whole packet, x9 as much as was supposed to go in there.

Ah. Right. by ni (2.00 / 0) #13 Wed Nov 18, 2009 at 09:39:44 AM EST
I stand corrected: could definitely be yeast. I didn't realize the magnitude of the "too much" in question.

I was an idiot, the foil packet was old. by NoMoreNicksLeft (2.00 / 0) #14 Wed Nov 18, 2009 at 09:00:47 PM EST
I think it truly did say 1/4tsp... the 2 in front of that wore off or was smudged. I only noticed well after the fact on another of the same type. From this point on, I'm using a proper measuring spoon and yeast out of the jar. Hope it turns out better.

You should judge by by ni (2.00 / 0) #15 Wed Nov 18, 2009 at 10:18:36 PM EST
how firm the bottle is. Carbonation is directly proportional to booze, after all. Quickly throw it in the fridge when the bottle feels cool, and don't let it sit in there for too many days, and you should reach minimum booziness.

Some alcohol taste is probably inevitable. You are, after all, making alochol.

The recipe... by NoMoreNicksLeft (2.00 / 0) #16 Thu Nov 19, 2009 at 12:12:24 AM EST
Says that it shouldn't exceed about 0.5% though. I wouldn't think I'd even taste that.

Yes, you were probably over that. by ni (2.00 / 0) #17 Thu Nov 19, 2009 at 10:12:43 AM EST
I'm not sure if a person can taste 0.5%. Perhaps not. Anyway, I have an exam to write at the moment, but maybe I'll calculate the exam alcohol level you should see when I get home.

Two problems. by NoMoreNicksLeft (2.00 / 0) #18 Fri Nov 20, 2009 at 01:14:30 AM EST
1. I could never figure out a business model that would make sense.

2. I started looking into how it could be used to do video... since all videos are composed of still frames, it's not much of a stretch. But the database you'd need would be staggering. You'd need to do at least 600 keyframes per minute for the body geometries, and have a modified query language just to extract meaningful results from it. And while I could imagine someone classifying a still image in a minute or so, I can't expect them to keep rewinding just to get the motions right. Would need some sort of machine vision system, and that's way out of my league.
