Because whole paragraphs are a lot of work.

Update [2009-1-4 14:49:15 by Driusan]: Having just needlessly spent $200 on a film SLR off of craigslist, I hereby declare Operation: Save Money For Great Depression 2 a failure.

  • Still living in Montréal.
  • Still liking it better than Toronto.
  • Still have no friends here.
  • Will be up to 3 coworkers come January 15th. That means the office has doubled in size since I started.

  • Went home for Christmas.
  • Went to the AGO with misslake while I was there. It had a much better collection than I expected (surprisingly, better than the  Musée Des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, which I wasn't very impressed with), and the architecture turned out really well.
  • I've furnished my apartment, mostly. The bookcase will be delivered Tuesday. I may still need a desk, or another bookcase. People tell me I need a table, but those people are crazy.
  • It now looks more or less like this, except with a plush C'thulhu on the dresser, speakers on the coffee table, and an Edward Gorey calendar by the door.
  • I've gotten my books back from Toronto. That's what those wine boxes in the picture are.
  • I bought a refurbished 32gb iPod Touch from the Apple store. It's pretty much exactly what I wanted: a small touchscreen thing to check my email on, without a cumbersome contract for a phone that'll be obsolete halfway through the contract.
  • Alpaca has the best wool ever.
  • People who say MontrĂ©al are hellishly cold in the winter are right, but wimps. They need alpaca.
  • It goes down to -20oC plus windchill on the cold days, -5 on the warm ones. It's exactly what I've always wanted from a Canadian winter.
  • My french has not been coming along, mostly due to lack of effort. I must rectify now that Noël and settling in are winding down. I feel kind of guilty about giving some random guy on the street wrong directions to the metro. I hope I sounded confused enough that he didn't take me seriously.
  • I had the most uneventful new years ever. I went out for dinner, then I think I stayed awake until around 12:01.
  • I went for a hike on mont royal, now that the snow has packed in a little and I can walk on it. It was pretty and icy and great. I'm not used to seeing people snowshoeing or cross country skiing in the middle of a city. Or anywhere, for that matter.
  • The total cost of moving seems to be around settling around $3000. It's a little more than I was hoping, but it's not at all unreasonable. Now that I have just about everything I need, I need to start saving as much as possible to fall back on during the coming Great Depression 2.
  • What's going on with the PFC? It seems like a while since we've had one. I finally have my D40 again after coming back after Christmas. I've went out with it a couple times, but some kind of fun photographic challenge to challenge me would be fun.

Montréal Friends by duxup (4.00 / 1) #1 Sun Jan 04, 2009 at 07:44:36 AM EST
After some unpleasantness a while back my imaginary friend moved to Montréal.  You might try finding him, he's a bit moody though.

take a french course by clover kicker (4.00 / 1) #4 Sun Jan 04, 2009 at 01:26:58 PM EST
Try to find one with people about your age, surely one of the universities will have some night classes in conversational french.

Hmmm, Montreal university students...

That's the plan by Driusan (2.00 / 0) #5 Sun Jan 04, 2009 at 02:20:01 PM EST
But they seem to be more expensive here than they were in Toronto, and I need to find one.

Concordia seems to have a decent continuing ed one, but I may have missed the enrollment period for it.

try to get work to subsidise the course by clover kicker (4.00 / 1) #6 Sun Jan 04, 2009 at 02:31:22 PM EST
Can you make an argument that better french would improve job performance?

don't worry about saving money by Phil Urich (4.00 / 2) #7 Sun Jan 04, 2009 at 10:39:43 PM EST
it'll all be worthless when the hyperinflation hits anyways ;)

But that's still a few years off by Driusan (4.00 / 1) #8 Mon Jan 05, 2009 at 02:46:55 AM EST
I need to save for the deflationary spiral, then spend it all right before the hyperinflation.
