Breathe out.
Attain state of zen like calm.

My mother arrives tomorrow lunchtime. I cannot collect her at the airport and she refuses to use public transport or a taxi to come in so I could give her an apartment key. She would 'rather' sit in the airport for four hours where 'rather' is expressed as her preference but actually means I am a terrible daughter for not moving the training course I was booked on months ago.

She is staying for a week. I shall see if I can take one of the days off but I'm stacking up deadlines until mid September so it is hard to do that and not let a lot of people down (subtext, people who will actually appreciate my efforts rather than expect and then criticise). I have bought a cafetiere as she cannot use the espresso machine and refused to learn how, so last time I had to make her coffee every morning before work.

We have tickets for the Zurich Weltklasse athletics tournament which I bought her for her birthday. She has always wanted to go to something like that but those events never happen in Ireland and she will not travel by herself.

My mother is just past her mid 60s. She used to run marathons, turn cartwheels in the kitchen, go sledding down hills, fix her own car, climb up on the roof to fix the TV signal, mow a sizeable field of a garden with a push mower, do the cryptic crosswords in a remarkable time. Now she is just tired and afraid all the time. Time is cruel.

Age, time, some illness, loss of confidence in her own abilities I think. So more subtle than your three way choice.
