The grand canyon is, as advertised, a bigass hole in the ground. it's the prettiest big hole i've ever seen, though.

thus far we've seen a lot of cool stuff on this trip. lots of corn in Iowa, we drove through a big storm in Nebraska, and our first glimpse of the mountains was when the clouds cleared in Denver. that was pretty cool, actually, that they were hidden until we were almost into them. we left the interstate and took the scenic route down to Durango, where we stopped and visited friends. we saw some antelope (i think, they certainly weren't deer) as we came across a valley, and there were some breathtaking views while we were up there.

we went to Mesa Verde, did a little hiking and saw the cliff dwellings. our hiking trail was about a foot wide most of the time, and was right on the edge of a cliff. it was good that we did that, though, because when we got to the grand canyon yesterday we weren't quite as freaked out about walking on a paved trail three feet from the edge.

tonight we hit the LA area and the FlightTests, where we get to meet my "sister" and hang out with them again. i'm really looking forward to that. if anyone else is in that area, let me know, maybe we can meet up. Thursday we're heading home, though we're not yet sure which route we're taking. I'll try to update as we go, just in case someone has a couch available or something.

time to go- we're heading to find breakfast, then hitting the road.

We're spread out a bit along the way.

Their car broke down outside of Needles. :(

They're trying to find a shop and have fingers crossed it can be fixed quickly.

that's a pretty sucktastic place to break down by R343L (2.00 / 0) #4 Tue Aug 19, 2008 at 04:39:43 PM EST

The chances of any given repair shop trying to rip you off there approaches unity.

That, and, well, it's Needles. Possibly only slightly better than Quartzite.

we're alive by LilFlightTest (2.00 / 0) #6 Tue Aug 19, 2008 at 06:28:34 PM EST
there are two possible sensors causing the trouble. most symptoms point to the easier of the two, so we're going to try that. they should have the part tomorrow and it won't take long to put in. the shop the tow truck driver recommended is pretty decent- they stayed late to at least diagnose the problem, and don't seem to be charging us much more than this would cost back home. also, it's across the street from a hotel.

on the plus side, this is the first time this trip we've checked into a hotel before the pool was closed. we played in the pool for awhile, and have plans to snuggle and watch tv. tomorrow, while we wait for the car, we're going to wander down to the Colorado River (6 blocks or so) and have a gander at that. we can relax, because there's nothing else we CAN do.

Swimming pool by FlightTest (2.00 / 0) #7 Tue Aug 19, 2008 at 08:46:55 PM EST
Heh, considering it's almost 11pm and still 96F there, I'd be surprised if the swimming pool ever really closed. At Yuma (where it's actually only 93F now), they've let us stay in the pool long past "closing" as long as we're relatively quiet.

Watch out for mosquitoes around the Colorado. West Nile, you know.

Here's hoping for a quick fix for the car! Drop an email when you know if you'll be able to head out tomorrow. TFT was really bummed you couldn't make it today. :(

here's hoping what they're doing fixes it.
