when my family lost power for several days at a time - on two different occasions?

Yeah. Like that.

Well, not quite. Power was out at the house from late afternoon till after midnight. The only known casualty so far was the aquarium pump - as near as I can tell, the pulses of AC on line caused the magnetic rotor to break into pieces. Fortunately, we still had the battery operated bait pump we got for them back in '06.

Then, after fighting traffic for over an hour to go 10 miles, I discovered that power was still out at work. Annoyingly enough, they failed to send me an email, IM or voice mail message telling me they had no juice. What a Mickey Mouse outfit. Then I was told it might be days before the power came back, so I went grocery shopping.

Got home and powered up the lap top and discovered, yes, PECO had restored power to work.

At least this was more exciting when it happened. Last time, lightening hit the transformer outside our neighborhood and it glowed blue for about a minute before it faded. This time, the lightening hit a tree, which shattered, dropping pieces on the lines and catching fire in the process. I've never actually seen a tree burn before and, even though the rain put it out quickly, I really don't need to see that again. Way too close to my house, thanks.

we compensated with a squirt gun battle, and some coffee roasting.

instead of Elba, we were exiled to the living room where we were forced to play Yahtzee against our will.

just long enough for us to gather candles and matches.

The lights on route 29 in Malvern were out this morning, that made the commute a bit more interesting.

The biggest hardship was missing 5 minutes of Family Guy.

There were trees all over the road on 29 and 23 this morning.

I nearly got hit by some stupid bitch on 29 this morning while trying to make a left. She didn't know what it meant to stop and wait for all traffic to clear from all sides meant.

Its one long party whenever a hurricane comes through.

Heh. My closest exposure to a hurricane by ObviousTroll (2.00 / 0) #8 Wed Jun 11, 2008 at 03:56:12 PM EST
was when we were staying at Disney World and the staff issued us plywood for our windows and told us to fill the tub with clean water just in case.

They missed a few things. by greyshade (2.00 / 0) #9 Wed Jun 11, 2008 at 04:09:00 PM EST
Like candles, batteries, canned goods.

Booze, cards and dominoes are also handy.

Lightening by ucblockhead (2.00 / 0) #10 Wed Jun 11, 2008 at 04:16:45 PM EST
When I was a kid in Minnesota, we once had lightening hit a tree about 20 yards from our apartment. Jesus poop that was loud.

I personally have everything required to get onto the Internet on a UPS during a power failure. Work is not so advanced...

lighting hit that close while backpacking. I think we all broke the 4:00 mile with backpacks and hiking boots, and would have set the half-marathon world record if the trail didn't eventually hit a clearing.

For all those who were in scouting, this was at Philmont. Lots of ways to be struck by lightning there.

Who was sometimes called flash there. Not because I was fast, but because I'd make such a good lightning rod.

how wide can the power failure be? by garlic (2.00 / 0) #16 Thu Jun 12, 2008 at 07:06:54 PM EST
to the nearest wifi point, or the nearest cell tower, or the nearest comm satelite?

Just need the DSL line by ucblockhead (2.00 / 0) #17 Thu Jun 12, 2008 at 07:25:24 PM EST
As long as the DSL line has power, I'm fine.

(Until the UPSes lose power.)

a natural disaster.

Last week we had a nasty set of storms roll through. Schools closed for a couple days, power out in many places for several days, etc. Lotsa fun.
