Say goodbye to your train beers.

What is it about UK/Ireland/US that draws such a strong link between booze and violence/immoral behaviour? There's something of it in the nordic countries too but they seem less hysterical. Though perhaps if I could read their newspapers, it might appear otherwise. This law is silly though, as people committing acts of violence on the train are already breaking a law. Why will they obey this one?

Very tempted to push gym day until tomorrow and just take it easy today. Go for a walk, stop for some juice, that kind of thing. I slept with the window open last night, and although I slept very well, apart from dreaming that a ham omelette was somehow necessary for sledging, I woke up with my eyelids completely glued shut. I guess there's something out there that triggers eye-goo.

Half-way to the long weekend. Woot!

Goddam Boris by priestess (4.00 / 1) #1 Wed May 07, 2008 at 10:03:25 AM EST
You can bet he'll still be allowed to drink in the back of his fucking chauffeur driven Borismobile.

Are they allowed to search my hip-flask? How will they know if I'm drinking booze or pop?

So does it count if I'm drinking cleaning fluid? Turpentine? Or is it just alcohol I'm banned from drinking?

We should be told!

a strong link between booze by wiredog (4.00 / 2) #3 Wed May 07, 2008 at 10:05:31 AM EST
To be fair, there is a pretty strong link between them. Booze lowers inhibitions, lower inhibitions lead to violence (knife/gun fights are more common when one or both participants are under the influence) and "immoral" (or beer goggled) behavior.

Perhaps by Merekat (4.00 / 1) #6 Wed May 07, 2008 at 10:12:55 AM EST
But I don't see drunk Swiss/French/Spanish/Italian teenagers provoking fear on the streets in quite the same way. And they do get drunk.

How many reports have there been of drunken Swiss/French/Spanish/Italian football hooligans burning down the stadium? Perhaps the Brits (and Americans) are just naturally more violent.

Or perhaps the brits and americans have news media which whips 'em up into such a frenzy of hatred that they end up lashing out?

Ban the Newspapers on the tube I say!

lashing out by wiredog (2.00 / 0) #11 Wed May 07, 2008 at 10:31:10 AM EST
But they wouldn't lash out, violently anyway, if they weren't drunk.

Force all drinkers to get so lashed they can't stand up or punch straight. That'll solve the problem.

Um by Merekat (2.00 / 0) #12 Wed May 07, 2008 at 10:33:22 AM EST
Italian football fans kill each other. And FCZ vs. Basel gets pretty hairy too. Football is different though. There's this whole tribal thing with that that can encourage violence all by itself, plus the crowds are larger.

Yeah, this'll work by motty (4.00 / 2) #19 Wed May 07, 2008 at 12:00:50 PM EST
Instead of having the odd incident related to a tiny minority of blokes on buses with beers, now every single bus driver will be required to not let pissed people with beers on the bus, or have to stop the bus and deal with it if someone opens one. That'll reduce violence, sure, especially on night buses at the weekend. Nice one Boris.

And the tube. "Perhaps the mayor will come out with his underpants on over his trousers like Superman one Saturday to show us how it should be done, and maybe tell a crowd of Liverpool supporters that they can't drink on the train."

Some weird cultural stuff. by Tonatiuh (2.00 / 0) #20 Wed May 07, 2008 at 09:10:32 PM EST
In Mexico (and other places) to get drunk is to be in a shameful state. It is not supposed to be fun and drunkenness is frowned upon and seen as socially  unacceptable (plenty of people still get drunk and make fools of themselves, but they will never be proud of it after the fact).

Here in UKia most people go to a pub with the express intent to get drunk, drunkenness is seen as an end on itself without which fun on the night is not fully achieved. Add to this the insistence on pubs to force most people to stand and the lack of food (in Spain, Italy or Germany you will get food with your drink, it is a given, in the UK you are almost discouraged from eating), all this combined creates this most unpleasant situation across UK's down towns.
