Often the most interesting part of the paper.

The obituary crew at the Post has a blog, called Post Mortem. An entry today leads to this Chicago Tribune obit:
When Milton Altman was 95, his grandson-in-law helped him buy a used car from a Chevrolet dealership when, as they inked the agreement, the salesman offered to extend the warranty.

It seemed unnecessary since Mr. Altman, a retired drapery salesman, Cubs fan and nonagenarian runner of errands, would be 102 when it ended, his family noted. They rejected the warranty.

...

Survivors include two other grandchildren, David and Mark Abramson; eight great-grandchildren; and a used Chevrolet, warranty not included.

Mr. Altman was 106.
Saw this one in the paper this morning. He probably did more than most to further human happiness.
Happy V-E Day.

Oh yes by Vulch (4.00 / 1) #1 Wed May 07, 2008 at 01:52:20 PM EST

I get a lot of book recommendations from them. The first woman to fly supersonically doesn't seem to have written one but The Cretan Runner did, as did Wilfred Thesiger (several in fact) and I've duly wandered off to Amazon and bought them. I'd like a copy of Harry Humphries book about his time with 617 squadron, but it's currently out of print.

Lots of Second World War around at the moment, but that's the way things work out as the survivors who were in their twenties reach their 80s and 90s.

but only to make sure I'm not in them.
