Yes, I'm still cranky about the color management thing, but I'm still having an utter blast with the camera.

The problem with Azaleas by ObviousTroll (2.00 / 0) #2 Tue May 06, 2008 at 01:44:42 PM EST
I always take pix of azaleas, but I always have trouble getting interesting photos of them because they're such an explosion of flowers that it's hard to get a really interesting picture.

I really like this one by the way.

With, actually, Dad's Pentax. He'd just bought it and I took it out for a test drive.

Less flowers....more pets by duxup (2.00 / 0) #3 Tue May 06, 2008 at 02:05:50 PM EST
Not that there's anything wrong with flower photos... well maybe there is but flower photos are only challenged by household pets when it comes to repetitive photography topics on the net.

I guess children is probably up there too but I like babies so I don't complain about those.

There are serious advantages to photographing flowers.
  1. They don't complain about how they aren't dressed/made up/hygenic/sufficiently attractive to photograph.
  2. They don't fidget, slouch, blink or otherwise move whilst attempting to compose the photograph.
3.  I don't have to get a model release from them before posting their pictures on that flowerpr0n site I like so much.

Right there you've a compelling case for never taking a picture of a member of the animal kingdom ever again.

Would you PLEASE stop bragging about how you have actual friends of the female persuasion and I don't.

It's just... It's not right, okay?

Isn't SWHTL both female, and a friend of yours?

On a more serious note.... by ObviousTroll (2.00 / 0) #8 Tue May 06, 2008 at 03:28:56 PM EST
On of the things I'm looking forward to trying with the Nikon is a trick I used to use at parties when I had my ol' Pentax K1000: Walk up behind someone at a party. Focus on the back of their head, then tap them on the shoulder. Capture an excellent candid portrait in the split second before they realize you're taking their picture.

Nikon D60 you say? by blixco (4.00 / 1) #12 Tue May 06, 2008 at 08:15:33 PM EST
I bought my brother a D40, and he's making some fantastic pictures.  This one is fairly recent:

The camera sure helps. by blixco (2.00 / 0) #18 Wed May 07, 2008 at 08:31:32 AM EST
He was taking great pictures with a point and shoot, but the SLR really opened up a lot of possibility.

It certainly does. by ObviousTroll (4.00 / 1) #20 Wed May 07, 2008 at 08:40:32 AM EST
I've been using "bridge cameras" - the ones that are more than just a point and shoot but aren't SLRs - and I've been constantly frustrated with the slow lenses and shutter lag. This is like opening a door back to when I was 21 and was dropping $100/month on film processing and making SWHTL pose1 while I experimented with lighting, exposure and all that good stuff.

1 Not what you're thinking, you dirty man. (She wouldn't let me take those kinds of pix...)
