Long long time ago, Dear Wife and I found ourselves in an elevator car in Boston along with four extremely tall gentlemen.

After they got out and we were out of earshot, she asked me, "Do you know who they were?"

I said, "Kurt Rambis, AC Green, Byron Scott, James Worthy."

She said, "Why didn't you say hello?"

I replied, "What the hell is wrong with you?"

"They're LAKERS!"

In other news, Dear Wife remains hospitalized, in Martha's Vineyard Hospital, where she's been since last Sunday with a really, really nasty, I mean, life-threatening asthma attack. Which may now have morphed in to pneumonia.  Or, maybe she'll dodge that bullet and be home in a few days after they taper down the oxygen and steroids.

Maybe her spirits will be boosted by the prospect of the first Lakers-Celtics NBA finals in 20 years. She was never much of a B-ball fan, but she does value tradition.

hope the wife is OK like right the heck now.

Also, seriously tell your whole life to calm the heck down or we'll have to hit it with a rhino dart.

Rhino dart by johnny (4.00 / 1) #6 Sat May 31, 2008 at 12:46:08 PM EST
Thanks.

I've got a cold & allergies & last night I started taking Nyquil.  I expect that the active ingredients in Nyquil and rhino darts are the same thing.

I can verify this to be the case by MohammedNiyalSayeed (4.00 / 2) #7 Sat May 31, 2008 at 01:25:01 PM EST

Though it's damn near impossible to grind up and snort Nyquil. Not that I've tried, that's just what I heard.

I hope the lungs fight off the germs, and don't fight off themselves.

Asthma is a big deal. My brother got shouted at in A&E in January with something like 'For heaven's sake, we lose 100 people a year [actual figure quoted by doctor was an accurate one] to asthma, so why didn't you come in yesterday when your inhaler stopped relieving your symptoms', only snappier.

So I hope all calms down for you and yours soon.

I've known Betty for 30 years, and this is the 4th or 5th time she's been hospitalized for it. Obviously, one doesn't get admitted to the hospital unless one is really sick, and this episode is as bad as any I've seen. Very scary. The doctors in the emergency room last Sunday were clearly treating it as a crisis, and the nurse, a cool guy who could have passed as the lead doctor's twin, discretely turned off the warning beepers on the blood pressure monitor which were screaming with her BP at 210/110.  "Stupid machine thinks we're not watching," he whispered to me.

When dear wife is healthy, she can go many months in a row without needing her inhaler. The last time she was this bad was 18 years ago. The last time she was in the ER with asthma was more than 10 years ago. So you never know. It can strike anytime.

Most of the time it's OK, but when it's bad, it's very, very bad.

Thanks for your concern and regards to your brother.

We're in Falmouth. Anything we can do?

Please give her our love.

It would be cruel and unusual for you to drag the little ones onto the ferry to come visit her, though nothing would cheer her more, that goes without saying.

Perhaps a phone call tomorrow or a get well card in the mail?  Looks like she'll be there until Tuesday, at least. Phone is problematic, as she's not always able to speak. But worth a try, and thanks.
