Neither, apparently, is the black cohash.

Economic stimulus, I Fail Mrs. FT's first Mother's Day, general musings on life.

Computer

I'm typing this into Google Docs on my new laptop. I got a Lenovo T61p, Core Duo T9300 (2.5 GHz, 6 Mb L2), 2 Gb of Ram (1 stick) soon to be 4 Gb, 160 Gb SATA HDD, Nvidia Quadro FX 570M, 15.4" WSXGA+, Windows XP Pro, DVD-RAM drive, mini-dock and an ultrabay battery (swaps out with the DVD-RAM). Pretty nice. With the dock, I'm really starting to love having two screens, plus with my KVM I can have both the laptop and another computer visible at the same time. Man, I'm such a nerd. One might note that my economic stimulus money is going right to China. I can honestly say, though, that I had planned this purchase for a while, and the timing had noting to do with GWB's rebate folly.

I did get Office 2007 small business. The new layout kinda sucks, but at least it recognizes the old office keystrokes, so I can still get to paste special with alt-e, s. I set up VPN and Outlook to get my work email and I think I like Outlook 2007 to the 2003 client we have at work. I still wouldn't use it for my personal email though, I much prefer Thunderbird.

Life

I had to leave for Yuma on Mother's day (boo!), and I spent that week in Yuma, getting home lat on the 16th. Mrs. FT and TFT left at 7:30am to spend Mother's day with MIL. Mrs. FT, TFT, and MIL went to MIL's church, then to lunch with BIL and his family. Which all went much better the Mrs. FT expected, considering she hasn't spoken to her brother in years. TFT and BIL's daughter have chatted on-line a few times, and they seem to get along, so that's good. We did our mother's day on the 18th's instead. We didn't do much, just went out for dinner at Orange County Mining Company. We were going to go bowling, but the local alley had a tournament on and lanes wouldn't be open until well past TFT's bedtime. All in all, Mrs. FT's first mother's day wasn't all that she had hoped, and I guess most of the blame for that lies at my feet. Although the work travel was really unavoidable, I really should have planned something more than "dinner" to do on the 18th.

Since my computer had arrived while I was at Yuma, and Friday the 23rd was my "off" Friday (and the 26th is a holiday), I took the 21st and 22nd off to "relax". And found I'm really having a hard time relaxing these days. Mostly I've been setting up this new computer, but I find I'm not really relaxing. I can't focus, even writing this diary is a struggle for me, it has literally taken hours. I feel terribly overwhelmed to the point of not being able to start anything because I don't know where to begin. I've made a couple really dumb mistakes at work (see recent hole entry). Time to seek professional help, no doubt.

Mrs. FT

The hot flashes are back, and as bad as ever. The black cohash had been getting less and less effective and finally became completely ineffective, so Mrs. FT has stopped that. Along with the hot flashes, moodiness and depression have returned as well. Fun.

School

Went to CSUF to see about how do I recover from the bind I've put myself in on my thesis. I need to re-apply for Spring '09 session and pray that requirements haven't changed, or if they have, that my existing coursework will cover it. I don't know how I'd be able to take any more classes with the amount of traveling I do for work. My plan is to get working on my thesis, and just have to finish it up for Spring '09.

Airplane

$mechanic was supposed to be back in town about a week ago. I know his schedule is dynamic, but it's very frustrating not having an airplane for 5+ months. I guess my fallback position is to have it towed across the field to the FBO that's worked on it before, but I'd hate to face that bill.

Google

Saw a comment in someone's diary about writing in google docs and then posting, so this is my first shot at doing that. Has the distinct advantage of being able to work on it anywhere without having to remember to copy it to my flash drive. Also we started using google calendar for similar reasons, now we both have access to the calendar so we have a better idea of what's going on. I'm sure there are some other cool google toys I've not yet heard about as well.

End

And so ends another content-free diary.

As for moodiness, by muchagecko (4.00 / 2) #1 Mon May 26, 2008 at 03:45:48 PM EST
I recently got a gym membership. I thought it would keep me from getting depressed. So far it's worked. I may be frustrated that I'm not working, but I'm not mopey about it.

I don't know if a gym membership would help your Mrs - but it wouldn't hurt. If both your girls got memberships, it could be a bonding thingey. (I'm thinking about getting a membership for my girl).

Thanks for keeping us in the loop.

There's a nice one about 1.5 miles from home.

Good suggestion though, thanks!

We've been going fairly consistently by FlightTest (4.00 / 1) #7 Tue May 27, 2008 at 02:53:08 AM EST
since before we got TFT. It doesn't seem to have much effect.

I enjoyed my time in therapy by georgeha (4.00 / 1) #2 Mon May 26, 2008 at 06:29:14 PM EST
and I recommend a motorcycle again, it's somewhat like a plane, in that it banks, and many still have carburetors, plus you can work on it yourself.

You're outvoted by Mrs. FT by FlightTest (2.00 / 0) #4 Mon May 26, 2008 at 09:11:26 PM EST
I would actually like to learn to ride a motorcycle, but I doubt I could ever convince Mrs. FT to let me have one.

The airplane may (or may not, I don't know) be statistically more risky, but you're more in control of your own destiny in the air. The vast majority of crashes are caused by the guy flying. On a motorcycle you're more at risk from others' stupidity.

You have to assume the worst of other drivers by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #5 Mon May 26, 2008 at 09:42:39 PM EST
and always leave yourself a safe exit. If you ride safe and prudent, you should be safe.
