Podcast/free audiobook suggestions?

I get SO BORED when I'm at the gym and I'm plowing through MP3s quicker than I can download them. I'm open to any subject matter if it's interesting and well presented.

In return I give you:

Prime Minister's Question Time

Mondo Movie (my fave for the last year or so)

Adam and Joe (lollers!!!)

Try your local library for audiobooks by R Mutt (4.00 / 1) #1 Wed Apr 09, 2008 at 06:38:59 AM EST
If they're like Ealing Libraries, they've got quite a few audiobooks on CD now, so you can rip them to your player quite easily.

Not free, but I usually go for the Teaching Company on-sale courses: everything goes on sale once a year.

If we weren't all dutiful law-abiding citizens, in theory we could get quite a wide range of audiobooks and teaching company lectures over bittorrent from the usual places.

try Escape Pod. I don't like all the stories, but enough of them that I keep listening. Similarly, there's a new fantasy podcast, Podcastle, and a horror podcast called Pseudopod. Podcastle is new, but they had a nice reading of a Peter S. Beagle story as the first episode. I wasn't all that impressed with the quality of the stories on Pseudopod when I gave it a try shortly after it launched. It may have improved. There's also a serialized free (I think) audiobook page at podiobooks.com. The site isn't loading for me currently, though, and I haven't been there in months, so I can't vouch for that one.

Pseudopod sounds good by nebbish (2.00 / 0) #4 Wed Apr 09, 2008 at 08:16:15 AM EST
I listened to Escape Pod a few times but didn't really like the stories. It's a matter of taste - I much prefer cheesy horror to cheesy SF!

Thanks, I'll give Pseudopod a go.

The Guardian's by yicky yacky (4.00 / 1) #5 Wed Apr 09, 2008 at 11:40:25 AM EST

Football Weekly / Football Weekly Extra (Monday and Thursday respectively) are better than average for that kind of thing. Hosted by Football Italia's James Richardson and manned by the bored Guardian journos, they actually get quite rude and sarcastic with each other, which makes a refreshing change. Last Monday's edition is here and is fairly typical.

To be honest, I only tend to listen for the spectacularly awful yet amusing puns, such as this week's "And, in Istanbul, it's not only tourists who are asking 'Is this the Bosphorus?' as Galatasaray go looking for a new manager". It's a strange kind of genius.

Done.

I should try it again by nebbish (4.00 / 1) #6 Wed Apr 09, 2008 at 12:06:28 PM EST
I listened to it once ages ago and wasn't that impressed, often depends on your mood though with these things. "The Fiver" Guardian football mailout is just brilliant, so the podcast must be up to a decent standard.

ones, rugby, cricket are quite good too.

ITV Tour de France ones are good when that rolls around.
