Check it out.

CNN World Autism Day!

I'm on a site that connects people by health issues. It's kinda nice. I've gotten a lot of support from other mothers with autistic kids. My mom is there connecting with folks with all of her health issues. PM me if any of you would like an invitation to the site.

I'm going to walk left, right, left, right by greyrat (4.00 / 2) #1 Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 01:39:51 PM EST
straight out to my car and drive straight home for a curry I hope I have enough red food coloring and if I see a yellow car on the way I'll just close my eyes until it's gone. And If I count four yellow lights that's bad I'll have to turn instead and stay

I'd forgotten about the food coloring. by muchagecko (4.00 / 2) #2 Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 01:54:03 PM EST
I might try that with my son.

Thanks!

I'm afraid of what I'd have to do, by greyrat (4.00 / 2) #5 Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 02:15:31 PM EST
since my favorite color is blue. I liked the irony in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time that curry is often yellow, but it was his favorite food. I thought the food coloring idea was pretty ingenious.

I wanted to reach into the book and strangle the damn kid in 'Curious incident'...

How odd. I experienced him as being by greyrat (4.00 / 2) #4 Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 02:11:57 PM EST
one of the saner characters. I really liked reading that book. I felt like I was autistic while reading it. For course, I'm a total sociopath anyway, so it wasn't a big leap.

and there I was by sasquatchan (4.00 / 3) #8 Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 02:42:51 PM EST
cheering that the underground train would hit him, or the guy grabbing the kid would drop him after being punched and the #$@# book would be over with.

Hmmm. Now I'm wondering by greyrat (4.00 / 2) #10 Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 02:47:49 PM EST
who the real sociopath is in this thread.

I really got into the main character also. by muchagecko (4.00 / 2) #11 Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 02:51:03 PM EST
I'd finally gotten a window into how my son feels.

I suspect you like the main character because he's binary.

That's the kicker, innit? by ammoniacal (4.00 / 1) #7 Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 02:36:59 PM EST
Parents of normal kids feel that way some days, but parents of autistic kids feel that way much more often, but you're not supposed to choke out your kid.

This is one of the reasons I have respect for 'gecko. She truly has nerves of steel when it comes to her kid and she's a great mom.

Irony: ammo says it's time. Tom is blocked.

I thought - "what can I do to celebrate World Autism day?"

I'll try to teach my students the difference between coincidence and correlation, since the media fails it so huge on that issue, it's sad.

What's funny is by joh3n (2.00 / 0) #17 Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 09:00:56 PM EST
that it's probably easier for me to scientifically argue that postulate to be valid than it would be to show that vaccinations cause autism.

It wouldn't help CNN's ratings though, so why bother.

correlation vs causation vs coincidence by Merekat (4.00 / 1) #18 Thu Apr 03, 2008 at 04:59:57 AM EST
None of the accuracies matter to people sometimes when they are in a stressful situation and looking for someone to hold accountable.

I have sympathy for parents who believe their child's autism is caused by vaccines but I really wish they would not pour all that energy into something that on balance of evidence to date probably isn't true. Kids die from measles.

I should definitely have included causation.
