That one day my four little children will play below a tree, but sadly I think the tree in my front yard can be saved.  With pics.

We moved into the house a few months ago so whatever neglect happened was not on our watch.  The first pic shows how tilted the tree is.  It is way tilted.  The second pic shows some serious cracks (they go quite deep) down the trunk of the tree.

The real sad part is that it isn't just some new tree.  It's about 4.5 inches thick at the trunk and quite tall.  Why the previous owners let it go like this is beyond me.  We're going to have a tree guy check it out but I'm thinking we're going to have to have it removed and then plant an new tree.

The next tree, wrap the lower trunk during the winter, or paint it white.

(We can strip mine the rest later.)

you can wait to see if anything blooms whenever your spring happens.

Consult a local landscape architect to get ideas for what grows well in both your climate and particular area in your yard (looks like full sun to me..) and for what "type" of tree you want (low maintenance, ornamental, something you can hang a swing from, etc etc). Expect to pay > $250 for any good sized tree (ie large root ball and well established..)

Get some large rocks scattered over the lawn so the next muppet who drives off the road says hello to something more solid than a tree first.

Looks like someone ran into it and damaged it, then something else got into the scar and caused further damage internally.

There is some growth on the branches already for buds.  Having said that I'm sure fairly it is doomed.

I'm having the local tree people take a look at it but I'm sure I know the answer already.

We'll see what happens when we start popping them out, but four seems like a good number to have under a tree.

I have a tree that looks much worse than that in the winter. In about three months, it'll have the most amazing plums I've ever tasted.
