So in another forum a few months ago during a debate about music I was pointed to a Finnish Band called Nightwish.

Damn that was one of the best pointers I have gotten in years!

I put the band on my mental list of gotta look into this because the poster was so positive about the band. The debate was about bands that go through a lead singer change which Nightwish apparently just done. That made me a little nervous so they got back burnered for a bit, but eventually I got the time and motivation to look into it (I've got a 6 Month old at home time is limited).

A couple months ago a similar tip made me jump the fence on a band called Tiles.  I got burned on that one, hold Crap that band blew the holy goat cheese.  Not wanting to get burned again I decided that the right answer this time around was good old bittorrent.  "Try before you Buy"

I picked up a torrent with the bands entire back catalog and another with the latest Disc.  It was mentioned in the debate that they were not in a Van Halen situation with the change out, ie...complete fan schism about the qualities of the new and old singers...but in more of an AC/DC situation (although in this case the previous singer isn't dead) where the fan community is accepting of both and the new singer and competently move forward with the band while still dealing with the back catalog.  I started with the latest work...and HOLY Crap was it good!

Powerful Stuff, Sorta but not quite symphonic Hard Rock Opera.  I like the current singer's voice quite a bit.  If I had to place the band musically and it this is only on my own scale of things I'd say they on a scale of Dream Theater to Evanescence they fall a little off center to the Dream Theater side, with a tiny bit of Disturbed shaken in to add a little flavor.

So now pumped on that first listen, I went and cracked open the band first disc with the original singer.  It did not disappoint in any way and it definitely shows they have stood the test of time.  Stylistically the first disc definitely sounds like the same band, the comparison of first to last certainly betrays a bit of growth musically.  The singer Comparison is a little difficult they both seem to fit the music style well and carry the songs they have done well.  I'd say the original singer might have a little more range than the new one.  However the new singer in my opinion seems to better fit the direction the band is going in musically.  I've listened to a few live performances where the new singer does both the new and the older material.  Her voice is a better fit for later material, but she carries the songs from even the first disc competently.

The local Music store has now received 5 purchases of Nightwish music in the last 2 weeks I think I am one disc away from purchasing all the stuff they have available.  Amazon will probably be tapped to pick up the slack and fill out the collection.  Take that RIAA, bittorrent has generated sales of over $100 in material when I am done that would probably have never happened otherwise.

In conclusion, Good Music if you've never listened to them check them out.  Probably a good fit for you if like Dream Theater, Rush, Evanescence, Disturbed, or other similar bands.

I really enjoyed listening to Nightwish on Pandora before they blocked ex-US connections.

Points for anyone able to tell me how to get Pandora from outside the US.
