our first night without the dude!

we passed friday night sans dude.  i think we got to the inlaws' place around 6-ish, walked in and within a minute my m-i-l was shoving us out the door.  the dude was cool.  his mommy was much better once we hit the liquor store and picked up a fantastic bottle of tempranillo from argentina.  we've found a grape that we dig.  we drank it with seared tuna steaks covered in mango vinagrette, aparagus and baked potatoes.  a fine meal served in relative silence.

we missed him a lot.

after dinner we fired up a netflix dvd that's been on the tv for about 4 months now: spider-man 3.  it broke us.  as in "brokeback mountain" - the only other movie to share the dubious honor of being shut off halfway through.  at the 1:15 mark of spider-man 3 we had yet to be impressed.  in fact, it was pretty bad.  so we did what i always do when i see a marginal comic book movie:  called my brother and bitched.  i took his advice and dug on the new incredible hulk trailer and was pleased.  it's gonna be a good summer.

and then we played lego star wars (the original trilogy) until about midnight.  why?  because it was there.

the dude was liberated from his grandparents at around 10-ish the next day after a fantastic breakfast of puffed pancake smothered in mixed berries, eggs and (turkey) bacon.  delicious.  while stacky went to get the dude, i worked around the house and in the garage a bit.  what i did without a bandsaw, i have no idea.  the world is new again!

i sanded the kerfed linings on my guitar, but didn't get very far.  stacky wanted to get the herb garden planted, so i took dude duty and we tried a nap.  he was exhausted.  i managed to get about 20 minutes myself.  not too shabby!  then we prepared for dinner with my dad and stepmother.

that did not go well.

the dude has been goin' non-stop all week long.  he spent the night with his grandparents.  he was tired.  so we had to cut the visit short.  i feel bad that he wasn't 100% for my dad, but he understands.  the dude got his rest sunday and was much better by last night.

sunday was highly productive in all areas save the one i wanted to be most productive.  most of my day was spent in the garage.  while the dude napped, stacky took care of patrolling the yard for canine feces and weeds.  i tried to work on my guitar.  after a bit, she had to go in for the dude.  we were also out of dog food.  and the oil in her car needed to be changed.  and the back yard needed mowing.

i went to the pet store and the auto parts place.  then i went back to the auto parts place (never assume you have a filter...just buy it...you can always use an extra oil filter).  i mowed the back yard quickly.  then i set to changing the oil.  as it drained i was accosted by our "crazy neighbor" about the grass clippings (less than 4 ounces worth) in front of our curb.  this is our second or third interaction and he has never offered his name.  he simply adds vague threats about the neighborhood association (good f'n luck with that...like i give a flying rat's ass) and whines about the clippings.  this time he said he was the president of the association.  this will prompt a fantastic letter to said association about someone passing himself off as an officer of the group.  as it stood, i stared at him for an uncomfortable moment without a word and walked back to my garage.  the next time he tries to speak with me i will tell him that i'm from the midwest where people are friendly and civilized.  i will let him know that in my part of the world one offers a name and a hand before criticizing his neighbor.  and then i will tell him to kindly fuck off and stay away from my property lest i feel the urge to remove him forcibly.  or better yet, i'll just tie porschea up in the front yard and that will assure my solitude.  fucking moron.

so for those keeping score: i got the lawn done, the oil changed and dog food all in one day!  i got very little done on my project work but that's the way of things.  my new philosophy is that the best i can hope for on the weekends is about 2 hours a day.  i might start getting up at my usual time (5:15 am) on saturday to make sure i get some stuff done.  it'd be tough, but it might be worth it.  we'll see.

now all i have to do is make it through today and tomorrow and i can have 5 days off in a row.  nothing like a little quiet time in front of a campfire to improve one's attitude.

Let me warn you right now by riceowlguy (4.00 / 1) #1 Mon Mar 31, 2008 at 10:06:24 AM EST
It was a rude shock to get to Lost Maples and discover there was a burn ban in effect, so all the firewood-gathering I did was for naught.  Ironically (can it, prescriptive linguists) it rained on us while we were there.  Anyway, you should call ahead and check to see if there's a burn ban where you're going before you get your hopes up.

burn ban?!!?!?!?!? by clock (2.00 / 0) #2 Mon Mar 31, 2008 at 10:45:29 AM EST
WTF?!?!?!?

this might seriously piss me off.  thanks for the heads up tho.  hope you had a good time despite the rain.  i'm one of those who doesn't mind it.  but the dog would.

bastrop SP might be different by StackyMcRacky (4.00 / 1) #4 Mon Mar 31, 2008 at 11:11:06 AM EST
since you aren't allowed to collect firewood for burning.

plus, each campsite has a grill thingy, so we'll be able to use that.

You're not allowed to collect firewood at Lost Maples either, and the burn ban was for the whole park, so we couldn't even have a fire in the grill thingy - wood, charcoal or otherwise.  Call them up right now and find out.  Find out if they'll let you use a containerized fuel stove and get one of those if you want to.

we have a camp stove that will do the job, but no fire at all isn't going to work for us.  cooking is...well...pretty important.

so you were breaking the law! by StackyMcRacky (2.00 / 0) #8 Mon Mar 31, 2008 at 03:29:21 PM EST
accordign to the official Texas Burn Ban list, Bastrop County is not currently under a burn ban.

So you were breaking the law!

If you're referring to my line about "all the firewood-gathering I did was for naught", I was gathering that while in Houston.  You'd be surprised how much kindling you can pick up off of sidewalks and streets.  Otherwise, I dunno what you're talking about.

Spiderman 3 by nightflameblue (4.00 / 1) #7 Mon Mar 31, 2008 at 02:43:49 PM EST
That there is some suck. I was with it, though not enjoying it, right up to the point where Tobyspiderdumbass decided to lay a beat-down on his woman. I'm not the comic geek some are, but there's certain lines you don't cross even in trying to create an anti-hero period in a hero story. I hated most of the movie, but that was the point where it turned into a total joke to me.

Unfortunately, it was movie one in a double feature at the drive-in, so we stayed for the entire thing. It only got worse from there.

Also, being dudeless: UR DOIN' IT WRONG! All our children are of the furry variety, and you know what happens when we don't have them for an evening? Nothing that should be documented at HuSI, I can tell you that much.

Wait, wait, wait... why does this require the pets to be gone?

I'm pretty tolerant of the whole "our kids are our puppies/kitties/goldfish" thing, but isn't that taking things just a little too far?

[ Parent ]

Oh no, no, no. by nightflameblue (4.00 / 1) #11 Mon Mar 31, 2008 at 03:52:45 PM EST
It doesn't require the pets to be gone. But it takes on new dimensions of weirdness and wrongness when you don't have to worry about what the puppies are gonna do if you toss each other over whatever piece of furniture without having to make sure you're not going to get mauled by one of them for hurting the other. Normally we have to segregate by rooms. Remove that little obstacle and there's less holding us back.

Not that there's much holding us back on a normal day.

Dude Camping by notafurry (4.00 / 1) #10 Mon Mar 31, 2008 at 03:42:23 PM EST
You must tell us how it goes.

Plans are afoot, indeed they are, for at least three camping trips this summer. One by boat, one by car, and one - still tentative, admittedly - by foot.

(That is, one overnight trip by sailboat, one camping trip where we'll drive to the campsite, and one where we'll hike in.)

That's with both the 1 year old and the little 2 month old.

i highly suggest by StackyMcRacky (4.00 / 1) #12 Mon Mar 31, 2008 at 04:07:05 PM EST
reading some of the threads on the "hiking with kids" forums at Backpacker Magazine.  LOTS of great tips there, even for just car camping.

Last week, I set up the tent in the living room, and the dude and I played in it a couple of times a day.  He's much less fussy spending long periods of time in places he's familiar with, so I'm hoping playing helped that a bit.

I'm looking at my map again. by ammoniacal (4.00 / 1) #15 Tue Apr 01, 2008 at 04:29:01 AM EST
Yes, it still appears that Texas is in the "midwest."

Perhaps all he needs is a gentle, guiding hand to return him to his midwestern ways?

Irony: ammo says it's time. Tom is blocked.

oh my dear friend! by clock (4.00 / 1) #16 Tue Apr 01, 2008 at 08:14:36 AM EST
tejas is midway through north america but it is as far from the midwest as mongolia.  remember, this is the republic.  things are different here.

and i will provide that guidance in the name of being neighborly.  that is certain.
