HITLER'S DESPERATE GAMBLE
The original title of this book, DARK DECEMBER, was first published in 1947 but Ballantine Books has published the soft cover since February, 1957, most recently in the 1980's.
The story of Hitler and Germany in their last gamble in a bid for victory has been told many times over. Though I have several other books on this subject, this small paperback has its own appeal. Various questions presented in this book are, among others,: Why American commanders were taken by surprise; How companies and platoons stood off Panzer brigades; What really happened at Bastogne-and what the press reported; and Why the Allies, though badly mauled, were able to snatch victory from defeat. "These are just a few of the questions this book discusses and conclusively answers ...".
Though the book is fairly dated it holds up rather well, and though more recent books may have updated information on this attack and subsequent battle, this small paperback is yet a pleasant read. While no illustrations are included several helpful maps are.
Recommended.
