A few weekends ago my parents came to visit. My dad's working in Houston, my mom came down to stay with him most the week, then they flew up to Dallas Friday. My dad hadn't been here since I have, and my mom hasn't visited me since the year or two after I moved here.

I was a bit nervous given the things I'd have to hide and do without and the cleanliness and happiness required. But I think I managed it all quite well. Took them out to a nice dinner Friday night and then drove them around Saturday, eating, checking out the grassy knoll, seeing some fancy houses & White Rock Lake, etc. My dad and I went out for a run for an hour and my mom stayed behind to clean up my apartment...that's a pretty sweet deal. I mean, it was "clean" to me, but not like, chick clean. She washed things and cleaned cabinet doors and such. Weird stuff that guys don't do. Here's a review of the places we ate at.

So I got rid of them Sunday morning and was quite pleased with myself. Had a weekend or two to myself before last weekend, which I spent in Hot Springs Arkansas. It was our annual drunk fest - Oak Lawn horse track affair. So the day after Dallas' yearly "oo noez is a quarter inch of snow EVERY1 PANIC!!!1", I drove up to Hot Springs in perfectly lovely if slightly cold weather. I believe Friday night we pretty much just hung out at the fabulous Lake Hamilton Resort (conveniently located next to a handful of dilapidated buildings scheduled to be torn down for almost 15 years now). Saturday we managed to get up early and make it to the track prior to the first race. Beer and reuben in hand I went to take a look at the horses before making my first bet. And I won. So I continued to check out the horses before every race and on the 4th or 5th race I managed to hit a trifecta for about $50. Ended up ahead at least $20 ahead before we checked out early to make our way to McClard's. McClard's is a pretty famous BBQ joint in Arkansas, favorite of Bill Clinton, that I've been dieing to check out for about 5 years. After much badgering and threatening to go by myself we got there. I had the ribs & tamale. The tamale was probably not even mediocre, but the ribs were pretty good. Too much vinegary sauce and cheap ribs to start with, but meaty and definitely smoke flavored. So big props to McClard's for selling actually smoked meat instead of crap with "barbecue sauce" (something that shouldn't even exist) dumped all over it.

So otherwise life's actually been pretty busy even while I'm in town. I've been out to eat quite a bit, scoping out the Arabic restaurants for a future food crawl, opening night at a new and fairly impressive "modern italian" restaurant in town (pancetta cream sauce? mmmmMMMMmmMM), and a stellar omakase dinner at my favorite sushi place in town. Hopefully  I make it to the top Vietnamese joint in Dallas Saturday afternoon for some Banh Mi and the spicy beef soup if I can figure out what it is (not pho).

I started training for a strongman competition a couple weeks ago. I don't have to submit my application or whatever until April so if I can manage the training until then maybe I'll compete. I got talked into it by a new guy at the gym (and work) who competed recently in Ft Worth for the first time and got third place in his division/weight class. Being one of the few guys in the gym doing olympic lifts and squats and such we started talking about working out and then his enthusiasm and such got me convinced to train with him. It's pretty intense, 5 or 6 days a week, which I needed, since I was losing motivation. Basically it's a pull  (deadlift) day, upper body push & power cardio day, Wednesday is flexibility & core training + 30 minutes light cardio, a brutal squat day (plus power cardio), olympic lifts (primarily clean and press) on Friday, and then event training on Saturday. The power cardio is some kind of complex (6 exercises, 6 reps, no rest) with 55-95 lbs, then heavy bag shuttle runs...basically a variety of sprints carrying or dragging a heavy (boxing) bag. Yesterday I added  "plate carries", two laps around the gym carrying a 100 lb plate and now my arms are all bruised up :D

Had a date with a <4' tall asian chick a couple weeks back and didn't email her like I said I would. I mean she was cool and stuff but I'm just to self absorbed to want to date. I would fuck, but that's about all I really have time for. And I don't really know how to put that across to women so I just don't say anything.

fuck you." It's work for me twice. And it might have worked a couple more times too. Oh, and that's over forty years.
