I just picked up my parents' dog from the boarding place.

My parents are touring Germany right now, so they left their dog at the boarders.  You may remember this dog from pervious diaries - the JRT that's a total pain in the ass.  Anyway, she's been coming home sick the last few times they left her so I agreed to pick her up early.  I left a message at the place at 9am saying I'd pick her up at 10 in order to give them time to bathe her.  When I showed up, she was soaking wet.  OK, whatever.  They hand me her stuff, I plop it in the trunk and we go.  When I get home, I gag upon opening the trunk - her bed and blanket are totally soaked with urine.  It's so bad, I can't salvage either item.  Also, she has streaks of poop on her butt.  Um, didn't she just get a bath?

Disgusting.  Totally unacceptable.

I have called the place and left them a message asking somebody to call me back because I'm pretty unhappy with the state of how her things were returned.  I plan on ripping these people a new asshole.  If they don't call me back, I will show up on their doorstep and chew them out in person.

Again, I'm not a fan of Dolly, but she doesn't deserve to be treated like this.  She should be much happier at my place than at that awful boarding facility.

When my parents get back (Sunday), I will make sure they rip into the place as well.  No wonder she has come home sick the last few times she stayed there.

Update [2008-3-12 15:0:42 by StackyMcRacky]: The owner called me and we had a good conversation. He addressed my issues, apologized, and explained the ins and outs of boarding. It seems he's from Auztralia, and boarding facilities are quite different there. He's in the process of changing things at his place (they bought it less than a year ago) so issues like Dolly's don't happen again. He invited me to come tour the new kennels they have (only 3 at the moment) and are working towards installing in th rest of the place. Overall, it was very positive. While I wouldn't want to board my dog there in its current state, I would definitely check it out once they get the new facilities in. The guy actually knows and understands dogs, and is moving his business into a good direction (I do understand change takes time, especially when construction is involved).

good boarders are hard to find, I'm lucky in that we can usually use my parents (the're dogless and like having one around).

or Animal Control or whoever licenses these places. If it's that bad, they're passing all kinds of diseases around, and if that's all they care, you don't have any idea what other abuses are going on.

Report the fuckers. Few things make me more angry than dogs (and cats) being treated like that, no matter how much a pain in the ass the peg is. Of course, it's not only a moral issue, but a public health one as well, so it's doubly evil.

But I'm pretty fucking sure water-soaked dogs, urine-soaked bedding and shit-smeared butts aren't acceptable in Oz, either. I'd even go so far as to say if you tried that shit DownUnda that the dingoes would find your carcass somewhere in the Outback. I'd really like to know what the fuck sort of bullshit Steve Nerdwin crap he said.

I don't get the total loss from urine, either. It's sterile and comes out of blankets in the wash (something you'll learn in another 12-18 months). If the bed is some wicker thing just give it a 5-minute hosing off and leave it to dry.

he said all of it was unacceptable.  he explained why it happened, and what he's doing to correct the problem.

the urine-soaked stuff smells.  it's so soaked, it won't come out.  if it had been washed immediately, it wouldn't be a problem.  it isn't wicker, it's a fabric cushion thingy.

i've been dealing with urine issues for 4.5 years now, the dude doesn't frighten me.

Most fabric and filling for animal bedding is washer-safe even if it has to dry for a week. Use cold water only.

but, as i pointed out in another reply - this is my parents' dog, and it's the place they've chosen to use even though she's come home sick before.  I chewed the dude out, and will let my parents know when they get back. 

I'm just SO GLAD I've never had to board Porschea.  I'd hate to have to deal with this kind of crap.

I disagree strongly.

Would you accept that sort of treatment of the dude from a day care? Well? Would you?

I'm not saying that a kenneled dog has to be treated like a princess. And a dog is a dog. But urine and feces soaked bedding is unacceptable. Period. Full stop. And there is no further discussion. Construction is irrelevant. If you can't handle it during construction: close until it's done. Things are not different in Aus; that's a load of BS to blow off some non-confrontional milquetoast.

furthermore, the first time my dog came home sick from that place, i would have found a new boarding facility. this isn't my dog, this wasn't my choice.

i chewed the guy out, he laid out his case, and that was that.  i'll tell my parents what happened, and they can take it from there - it's their dog after all.

i apologize that i'm such a crappy writer that everything came off completely wrong.

The question some have here is what the guy could have said that put your mind at ease about urine soaked dog bedding, of such "quality" that it's totally ruined something a dog lays in. If it was "yeah one of the old employees was responsible for this and I shit-canned him 10 minutes ago" then fine, but if it's "Well only 4 of the dog beds were urine soaked this time, we're getting better"...

there's nothing he could have said to make me feel better about it - the deed was done, and there's no excuse.  i do feel OK with the fact he's trying to correct the problem at his facility, even if it's "well only 4 beds were urine soaked this time."  again, i don't board my dog, and even if i had to, i would never take her to a facility like this one.  my parents, on the other hand, are OK with it so there isn't a lot i can do other than calling the dude up and chewing him out (which i did).

hell, my parents don't even listen to me about one of the reasons their dog is so sick all the time is they feed her complete crap for food.

ever since my divorce, my mother thinks i'm a complete idiot who can't get her own shoes tied.  she refuses to believe anything i say is true.

my dad isn't like that; however, he has this odd blind spot when it comes to the dog (and politics, but that's another story).
