~Ouch~!

My oldest friend in the world and his wife have bought me a tattoo for X-mas.  The design is a tree and it's on the outside of my right calf.  It stretches from the ankle to an inch shy of the knee.
The second session (shading) was last night.  Three weeks ago, I had the outline done.

The shading is in progress in this photo:

Here's how it looks right now:

My new camera phone is big on resolution but really bad at macro or low-light shots.

It amazes me how colorful modern tattoos are. I still remember the horribly grey-washed uncolored mess some of the guys used to get about twenty years ago or more.

Both of my tats are black-and-grey, because I like them that way. Color or not, it's the artist that makes a good tattoo. Mine (when it was new -- it's faded to lovely silvery hues now):

Not what I'm talking about. by nightflameblue (4.00 / 1) #7 Thu Feb 28, 2008 at 10:02:38 PM EST
Yours looks good.  I'm talking about the ones that look like a bad photo-copy.  Plenty of guys in my home town went for tatoos and they all ended up looking horrible.  Faded from the start.  And none of the color tats looked like they had any color in them.

Maybe it was just a small-town artist gone bad or something.  But I've always been under the impression tattoos have gotten better over time.  Especially when it comes to color.

Oh, yes. by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #12 Fri Feb 29, 2008 at 07:07:07 AM EST
I know what you mean -- like the little dolphin-shaped smears some of my college dorm-mates got after a night of Boone's Farm. I do think tattoos have gotten better. Techniques have been refined, and more importantly, artists are required to have actual training in most places. As tattoos have gotten more mainstream, artists can't make money unless they're really good.

Joe's done almost all of my work.  He has a rarely-updated website at http://joekennett.com.  I have his phone number and other details if you want them.

I've been working on a design for, what, five years?  One of these days I'll be happy with it.

Makes me want to get mine colored again.

Fucking awesome. by toxicfur (4.00 / 1) #5 Thu Feb 28, 2008 at 08:04:34 PM EST
I love the detail in that work, and I love how the artist has worked with the contours of your leg so the tree looks like it really belongs there. As I posted above, I did tree tattoos. :)

Will they be added to the tree branches?

Irony: ammo says it's time. Tom is blocked.

These photos were taken just one day before the tattoo began to peel.  When it's completely healed, things may look slightly different.
