Who wants to come over and have a shovel party?

As of tomorrow, we have a large driveway...that hasn't been shoveled in its entirety all winter. in fact, all that's been shoveled is the front sidewalk, a tiny path to the back door, and a space big enough for the neighbor's (or whoever it belongs to) car to park. even with last week's rain, and the thawing this week, there's still at least a foot of dense, wet snow. and it's supposed to snow again tonight. if we want to be able to park in our own driveway, something's gonna have to be done. so come on over, bring your shovels, and we'll have a great time. or something like that.

we did our final walk through tonight...found a couple things that we wanted the seller to remove, and they're still there. his realtor is coming by for them tomorrow. at least, she'd better, since i don't want responsibility for disposing of them...

i'm off to shower and go to bed, i need to get to work early, so i can leave early to close....

Happy digging. Be careful of your back.

Too bad you didn't list snow by spacejack (4.00 / 1) #2 Mon Feb 25, 2008 at 10:47:12 PM EST
as one of the things you wanted removed.

The previous owners... by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #3 Mon Feb 25, 2008 at 11:04:26 PM EST
of mine and ana's house didn't move out all of their belongings. That meant that quite a bit of really kitschy stuff was left, including the ugliest lamp in Boston: a life-sized rooster in realistic colors, topped by a lamp shade that might have briefly been in someone's style in 1966. It is one of my favorite things about this house. I love that lamp. So who knows? Maybe there's something in the crap the previous owners of your house left that will grow on you.

Also, congratulations! And might I suggest a flame-thrower to take care of the snow. :)

he left some stuff by LilFlightTest (4.00 / 1) #4 Mon Feb 25, 2008 at 11:38:38 PM EST
that we said was okay to leave. some ugly couch-things, a chair, a table, a dresser, a picnic table. the couches will go to a friend's party room, and to the garage for when Nick needs to stop and think while working out there. things that were not okay to leave fall into the hazardous waste category.

it's not ours yet...but as long as it doesn't snow enough to prevent us from getting to the bank to sign the paperwork, it will be ours tomorrow. i just need to recruit some people to help me with some redecorating. i'm capable of doing it by myself, it's just more fun with a friend.

Our sellers by barooo (2.00 / 0) #11 Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 10:43:40 AM EST
did the same.  Like 30 empty paint cans.  When I bitched about it, he said to just smuggle them out one or two at a time in the trash and that was it.  They also didn't clean the gutters like we asked, and claimed that "oh we did they just got full again".  Fucknozzles.

he left the paint, so that we can touch up if we want to, which is fine. it's all latex paint, so it's not a big deal to get rid of. the other stuff, though...

how many freeze-thaw cycles have you had? by clover kicker (2.00 / 0) #6 Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 08:43:42 AM EST
It may not be physically possible to dig all the way down to the driveway.

Bring a sledgehammer...

While a sledge might work, by houser2112 (4.00 / 1) #12 Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 11:19:03 AM EST
I've found something like this to be indispensable for removing ice and hard packed snow that a shovel can't deal with.

there you go, using the right tool for the job... by clover kicker (2.00 / 0) #18 Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 04:15:59 PM EST
My dad once found a blade from an industrial wood chipper, and used it to make one of those. The handle is a steel pipe, and the blade is some ridiculously hard industrial grade of steel, honed razor sharp.

Between the sharpness and the heft it cuts ice like a light sabre, but you could trim 5 toes in one swipe if you weren't careful.

I make do with a 5 foot prybar, the extra weight somewhat compensates for the dull point. And of course having a 5 foot prybar comes in handy.

Before I bought the prybar I turn my sledge upside down and bonked it up 'n down like an ice chipper. It didn't work great, but much better than a shovel.

enough by LilFlightTest (4.00 / 1) #16 Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 04:06:25 PM EST
but we're getting an ice scraper. i'm not using a sledgehammer on practically new cement.

I would shovel by duxup (2.00 / 0) #19 Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 04:46:50 PM EST
The neighbors think I'm crazy for shoveling but I don't like machines (snow blower) and I'm not sure it is really worth the money / hassle to buy and maintain one that at most would get used six or seven times a year.
