on R343L.

since her arrival, i have been eagerly awaiting the chance to go skating.
today we were ready to mount a skating expedition.

she rented skates, i had mine sharpened.
we eagerly lept out of desert castle, carrying a folding chair to assist in our poor ice skating techniques. we were scarved, leg warmered and ready. we were heading out to the two nearby skating ponds to enjoy the edmonton landscape.

we stepped out into the brilliant alberta sunshine (the sun shines every day here) and noticed the dripping.
the snow, once so cold powdery that it sounded like cornstarch was melting.

it's +3 degrees celcius, too warm for skating.

now we are dejectedly sipping our hot chocolates and sitting indoors, because it's too warm outside. too warm for any winter sorts of activities, that is. too wet from the dripping snow.

i hope we have better luck engaging in alberta-style fun tonight.

I need to have my skates carved open by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #1 Fri Feb 15, 2008 at 02:01:19 PM EST
they no longer fit my feet, though if I hacked open the sides, they might.

Alberta needs Toronto's snow and sub-zero weather for a change.

Or did you guys get a chinook?

Edmonton does not; we just get global warming.

3C? by ambrosen (2.00 / 0) #4 Fri Feb 15, 2008 at 02:25:02 PM EST
That's what it was when I left the house this morning. And I've not been able to have any weather for skating since I was 8 or 9.

Actually, there probably was thick enough ice in Winter 01/02, but I didn't go.

Awww man -- stupid sun! by Lady Jane (2.00 / 0) #5 Fri Feb 15, 2008 at 05:29:51 PM EST
Doesn't he know that February is for ice skating and snow angels and that it isn't time to melt things yet???

Yay for hot chocolates though!  Hot chocolate or chocolate milk makes everything better, even if just for a moment.  My favorite is to get hot chocolate with peppermint!

Hope you guys have fun tonight!

To figure out what things are in this strange place. A case in point:

I kept seeing signs with little horizontal cylinders with hooks on top and then a name. I, figuring you need extra gas up here in the Frozen North, thought these were, like, propane filling stations. No, it turns out they were curling facilities. Those symbols are curling stones. Huh.

My favorite memory of my one trip to Canada (to University of Toronto for a conference in, um, 1999? 2000?) was of getting drunk on good Canadian beer and then going curling. I fell and hit my head on a stone. It was truly awesome.

are going skating tomorrow I think. A nice old man makes a rink right by us on Cooks Bay. I hope it's nice out!

Love you. Miss you.

p.s. Nubby (Degu in smaller cage) has now moved into his new giant cage, upstairs in front of the window. Sunflower is set up beside him. We have to put in some levels yet, but he's happy sitting on his Y shaped log thingy.
We have had NUMEROUS escapes (generally due to Sebastian) but everyone always makes it home. I hope the getting out lessens now that they're in their new digs. When bunny's upstairs area is ready we will be able to take them out and let them run about in there for playtime. Until then Tiptoe continues to win our hearts living in our Great room and coming out from where he is laying, often with the kitten, to say hello to me and nuzzle my feet when I come home from work.

Ok. The end.
