Things that suck:
Driver of a white Chevy SUV
Not stopping for a red light
Leaving the scene of an accident
Trying to pick up all of the teeth in the road
Waiting for surgery

Things that rock:
Bike helmets
No major trauma
Being really damn lucky

Physics Girl was hit by an SUV on the way home from campus yesterday. So far it looks like most of the damage is the jaw and lower face, no serious cranial swelling or internal bleeding, no broken limbs. Shes alive, and awake, because of the bike helmet.

She was hit hard enough that her bike frame actually came apart and she was thrown across the intersection onto the sidewalk. About 30 feet I guess. When the paramedics got there she was trying to pick up all of her teeth from the street. She says everything hurt whether she was lying still or moving, so she might as well do something.

Shes in hospital with her mother now. Apparently its going to be a while before the swelling subsides enough to get a better look at the jaw. So its going to be a week or so before the oral surgeon gets to work.

Waiting to hear back on her status before heading back up to the hospital. Its possible theyll release her to home care in the next day or two. Not much else I guess.

Yup, and lets all give thanks that it isn't for manslaughter.

If he's local, and there was paint residue transferred, and there were witnesses, and the SUV got a bit of surface damage, and the police work really hard. Oh who am I kidding?

Glad to hear there's no head trauma. Well, cranial trauma, at least.

Oh, fsck. by aphrael (2.00 / 0) #10 Tue Feb 12, 2008 at 06:19:19 PM EST
Oh shit, man, that sucks.

I hope she has a full recovery.

i'm a curious ex-local, so I wanna know: which intersection?

She at Dominican? I'm guessing from millman's couch offer that they moved her to Stanford?

Its looking good. by LinDze (2.00 / 0) #16 Wed Feb 13, 2008 at 08:46:03 PM EST
Just got back from stanford. might post an update if ive got time tonight.

They actually airlifted immediatly to stanford. She had some good head trauma so she went to the nearest legit trauma center. I went up that night, but went to her parents and slept for a few hours in the morning.

At this point it looks like shes lucky and has a tenative surgery appt for 10am tomorrow. Probably coming home fri or sat.

I hope she recovers, I really do.

I also hope the driver dies in a fire. Few things piss me off more than people who don't take responsibility for their actions.

Here's to a speedy recovery. by ammoniacal (4.00 / 1) #14 Tue Feb 12, 2008 at 08:11:48 PM EST
I would recommend staking out the intersection in a few days and/or offer a reward. Note the plate numbers of similar vehicles.
People tend to follow routes, so you might get lucky.
