Friday's are always nice, but this past Friday, it seemed like the women in my section were more electrified than usual.  "Hmm... I guess they've got something planned" thought I.  Feeing like doing something to unwind a little, I stopped by Ebisu on the way home and looked around - idly noticing happy-looking fashionable women to the right, to the left, behind, in front, all around!  "Hmm... it must just be one of those things - like a full moon or something" I mused. .....

..... The next day - it finally hit me what's going on!  The day before had been the last Friday before Valentine's Day!  Keep in mind that Valentine's Day here is not the same as in the West - here it's the day when women give chocolate to men.  (A month later - on March 14th, is when men give chocolate to women.  For more details, see your friendly Google search engine.)

I did notice that the shop I bought some things at was selling chocolate in front of the store, and there were several women looking over the display, but it wasn't until Saturday that I began to wonder if the more-festive-than-usual atmosphere the day before was due to the coming romantic day?  I'm still not sure, but it seems like it might have something to do with it - a last chance to get together with friends and discuss what/who/where/how/etc?

Do you mean that they raised their eyes from their own feet, or am I reading too much into it?

But giggling behind their hands? by Rogerborg (2.00 / 0) #3 Tue Feb 12, 2008 at 05:11:03 AM EST
Behind their hands, right?

Not any more... by lylehsaxon (4.00 / 1) #6 Tue Feb 12, 2008 at 09:45:13 AM EST
I wouldn't mind if they did actually... but the women I know here tend to open their mouths wide and laugh defiantly loud - as though deliberately trying to smash that old imagine of "hee-hee-hee" behind a hand....

Outdated I think... by lylehsaxon (2.00 / 0) #5 Tue Feb 12, 2008 at 09:42:14 AM EST
Are you over here now?  If not, when was the last time you were here?  I'm just curious, because the women are a bit different lately.  I've been digitizing some tapes I took in 1991, and the contrast with that era is striking.

Haven't been to Japan yet . . . by slozo (2.00 / 0) #7 Tue Feb 12, 2008 at 02:10:15 PM EST
. . . so a lot of my info/bias is from a gaijin Canuck who has lived there for years, and has a longtime Japanese girlfriend.

Yeah, I do hear the culture is changing.

And changed me.... by lylehsaxon (4.00 / 1) #8 Tue Feb 12, 2008 at 02:22:47 PM EST
The other thing that is changing/changed is me....   I haven't set foot out of the country in 12 years and I've been here for 24 years.  After prolonged exposure, everything starts to seem like it's normal.  Actually, come to think of it, the giggle-giggle girls certainly do exist, but there are also some very classy women....

Ebisu Women by lylehsaxon (2.00 / 0) #4 Tue Feb 12, 2008 at 09:40:04 AM EST
Ah mates!  I wasn't talking about schoolgirls!  I was talking about Ebisu girls!  They've got a certain amount of class!  Also keep in mind that women don't tend to get married here any more, so they just keep on pouring money into paint, clothes, shoes, restaurants, travel, etc., to the point where they become quite good at the single life after living it for a decade or two.

What am I saying?  Where is this going?  I have no idea.....
