Another expensive, pointless and intrusive project by Herring (4.00 / 2) #1 Fri Nov 07, 2008 at 02:19:18 AM EST
How many false positives do you reckon analysis of that lot will pop up? Also, what is the point of having Porn Mode on Chrome/Firefox?

Did you spot that recent piece of lunacy when some guy from Nottingham university (I think) was arrested and questioned for several days for downloading this alleged "Al Qaeada Training Manual"? The police chose to ignore that the document in question was:
a) Hosted on the Pentagon website
b) On the course list of reading material
c) Useless

I wonder whether it's possibel to fuck it up by embedding SQL into e-mail titles?

I think I shall write to my MP too. He may be a tory, but he seems to be a decent chap.

When they were just taking about a bill to record address data from emails. Asked her whether since my email server is based in the US and I contact it over a terminal session from a bash window through an ssh connection if they'd be able to see my email data and, since I couldn't imagine how they could, whether I'd be legally required to let her know every time I sent an email.

Then asked her if terrorists would also be legally required to notify the government of their email, or whether it was just law abiding citizens that'd be spied upon.

No reply yet but it usually takes her about a month

Ergo his three score and ten will have been up decades before any IT prject the government is involved in will be competently delivered.

Through the love shown to me by my fellow comrades on HuSi, I am now a lover of the Party That Will Lead Us To A Socialist Utopia, and a fervent Believer in Our Great Leader's ability to lead us through these hard times.

Our Glorious Party only wants to protect us from Internet Paedophile Terrorist Knifecrimers, and I will be writing to my MP to strongly support them in their earnest efforts to safeguard us all.

Those rightwing oppressors at No2ID are claiming some kind of victory, I hear.  Today I called Jacqui Smith five times to ask her to accelerate the ID card scheme because 2012 is too long for me to wait.  I look forward to the day I can respond crisply to a PCSO's demand of  "bitte papieren" with a shiny new card that will have my name and photo on it.

First they came for the Knifecrimers . . . by ammoniacal (2.00 / 0) #17 Fri Nov 07, 2008 at 09:41:04 PM EST
and I did nothing. Then they came for me, and I said "Get the fuck away from me, bitch, before I fucking stab you."

It was an unholy union of text and pulped wood that the Ancients used to distribute their blogs.

As Australia would like to do.
Come to think of it, I probably prefer the Aus solution as it will be cheaper to implement and completely fail to work.

Google "cleanfeed". At the moment, they just block kiddie porn, but Whacky Jacqui is calling for them to block "terrorist material" as well.

My Letter to my MP by codemonkey uk (4.00 / 1) #7 Fri Nov 07, 2008 at 03:18:03 AM EST
Dear Mike Hancock,

I read today in the Telegraph about the Government plans to "vet every telephone call, email and internet visit made in the UK", and would implore you to fight the Communications Data Bill (in it's current form).

This act, as reported, is a gross invasion or privacy, and another step on the path to the UK becoming a police-state reminiscent of Orwell's 1984.

Not only that, as an IT professional myself, and knowing the government's track record with technology, I foresee it being a massive waste of tax payers money, and largely ineffective.  Those that have something to hide can easy use hard encryption technology that the monitoring systems would have little hope of penetrating.

Since I very much doubt I am a lone voice on this issue, I look forward to hearing you voice your constituents opinions on this in parliament,

Yours sincerely,

...

you may want to re-think the signature.

A fair start by komet (2.00 / 0) #12 Fri Nov 07, 2008 at 04:12:29 AM EST
but I think you should also highlight the question of why e-mail is fundamentally different than postal mail, because this is an incongruence that normal people (e.g. MPs) can understand.

I see Mr Hancock is a Lib Dem, so he will certainly be receptive of your views, if not in a position to do a thing about it.

One minor note, by ambrosen (2.00 / 0) #13 Fri Nov 07, 2008 at 04:58:38 AM EST
Sadly, The Telegraph is not a paper whose name will inspire much confidence in the government, as it's become far too reactionary. (and I'm not sure if there's anything but the FT which does inspire confidence) Maybe a different start might make it present a little better.

the number of "lost" laptops, data disks, &c. And in the US, spying on the data for personal entertainment (or blackmail, &c).

That's only practical if you kill about 90% of the population first. Let alone the stinking ethics of it.
