Oh no! It's Halloween and I've ACCIDENTALLY STOLEN MY OWN SOUL.

That's right. I have managed to produced an Undead Version Of Myself which lives on the internet.

And now I'm not sure if I'm here or if I'm in a virtual land of the undead. I'm not sure if all my soul still lives within my body of it now I have a virtual copy of myself which lives on the internet if I'm also part immortal.

See for yourself: http://dalliance.net/

I can feel my soul splitting in two. THE HORROR! THE HORROR!

a kapital "k". I said as much to the chat agent, but it said nothing back. Does this mean that my soul too has bifurcated?

Buy my books, dammit!

I saw you saying that, and added a standard response for kreepy or however you spelled it. WIth more conventional spellings too.

I figure ten years of that and i'll be IMORTAL! HAHAHAH!

Virtual life wil do that I guess by priestess (4.00 / 1) #5 Fri Oct 31, 2008 at 03:38:59 PM EST
Yeah, it's a lotta lotta layers between openLazslo saying "draw a line" and actual pixels getting plotted, screen-ram being changed.

Still, even though Flash sucks, and OpenLaszlo is the only FOSS way I know of writing .swf apps, it's better than a java applet :)

Fair enough by motty (2.00 / 0) #6 Fri Oct 31, 2008 at 03:47:40 PM EST
I too am waiting for a FOSS swf generator, reluctantly, sort of, IYSWIM. Unfortunately, OpenLaszlo needs me to have a more recent machine than I do so it's not an option.

Strange by priestess (4.00 / 1) #7 Fri Oct 31, 2008 at 04:02:12 PM EST
This machine what I compiled that vPre on is way old. It's like a 1Ghz thing with feck all ram.

Perhaps you're screwing it al up by running windows?

If you can run java, you can compile an open-lazslo XML document into a .swf file I'd have thought?

Ah, wait by motty (2.00 / 0) #8 Fri Oct 31, 2008 at 07:51:00 PM EST
Java. Yeah. That's the problem.

I'm running Linux but I can't be arsed to jump through the hoops to get java going in order to run OpenLazslo. This is where I got to last time I looked into this anyway.

hoops by priestess (2.00 / 0) #9 Sat Nov 01, 2008 at 02:42:04 AM EST

Hoops like "apt-get install sun-java6-jdk"

I guess that can be tricky, theres letters AND numbers to type there ;)

Heh by motty (4.00 / 1) #10 Sat Nov 01, 2008 at 01:06:04 PM EST
No, the hoops involve clearing out enough diskspace on my /usr partition for just this one thing, which in the end, I don't really want that much and which might not even work all that well.

Ah, sounds like you need a bigger hard drive by priestess (4.00 / 1) #11 Sun Nov 02, 2008 at 03:03:50 AM EST
I also need a bigger hard drive. Stupid storage space, it's never enough no matter how much you have.

FWIW I think openLazslo is in many ways superior to actionscript for putting an .swf together. At least if you're a programmer rather than an animator or a artist or design expert anyway. Just a compiler and vim, which is still an unbeatable dev enviornment I reckon. I consider the click-free nature of the thing a bonus.

If you're building animations rather than applications it'd be a pain in the arse though frankly. You'd have to write an animation package of some sort.
