a flying submarine.

(As best I can tell, while the former is a military craft, the latter is down right trippy.)

Chill out, snowflake.

trippy by iGrrrl (2.00 / 0) #3 Mon Oct 27, 2008 at 03:03:17 AM EST
DARPA specializes in trippy. I mean, they brought you the internet, after all. How trippy is that?

I have solid evidence on this matter. by mrgoat (4.00 / 3) #8 Mon Oct 27, 2008 at 05:29:29 AM EST
The internets' "trippy" rating currently stands approximately 3/4 of the way between "balls" and "is that a turtle what".

The more you know!

Yeah, thanks to DARPA we're all tripping lolcats.

Gerry Anderson is sure to have some designs you could borrow.

Not so good with big iron.

Plus, I can't even decorate a room, so I'm the last person to turn to for James Bond coolness.

DNA, now, that's another story.

but I could find a clip other than some RC model thing. That, and the above comment specifically called out Gerry Anderson. You have better UTube foo than I.

Hell, it went off the air when I was 3, according to wikipedia - I must remember the reruns.

Wait, wait - wikipedia says you're right: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyage_to_the_Bottom_of_the_Sea_(TV_series)

it took me a while to find the name, it was on the Seaview page.

I have vague memories of seeing it in syndication, it probably isn't as good as my preteen memory thinks it was.

You can watch them all by ad hoc (4.00 / 2) #18 Mon Oct 27, 2008 at 09:25:11 AM EST
Right here.

But be prepared to be disappointed. Very few of them are any good. They all fall into that same sort of Irwin Allen schlock with Lost in Space style cheesy monsters.

The movie [neflix] is actually pretty good (Walter Pidgeon and Peter Lorre)

They did more than just fall into the same schlock by ObviousTroll (4.00 / 1) #26 Mon Oct 27, 2008 at 04:58:09 PM EST
I've got pretty clear memories of noticing the exact same monsters showing up in both Voyage and Lost in Space. I remember thinking it was pretty funny.

an aircraft that can maneuver underwater. by wiredog (4.00 / 1) #5 Mon Oct 27, 2008 at 04:26:01 AM EST
<Keanu>Whoa!</Keanu>

Not just an aircraft that can be carried by a sub, which the Japanese did in WW2, but an actual underwater aircraft.

Now if it can also go into space, that'd complete the unfeasible-technology trifecta.

That's already been done by theboz (4.00 / 1) #7 Mon Oct 27, 2008 at 05:23:36 AM EST
It's called the S.H.A.R.C. (Submersible High-speed Attack and Reconnaissance Craft).  It is basically a small one-person airplane that can go underwater too.  It's probably more functional as a submarine than an aircraft.

I mean, they want an airplane that can maneuver in water as in air, and you know, it's all fluid dynamics math to begin with...

Of course, that's a hard image to keep up, what with the squealing and all.
