A style guide

First, post relationship bitching is not healthy. It depresses you, and perhaps the only effect on the audience is to make us laugh at you. So the first useful advice is:

Don't Do It!!

However, I'm sure that most of us, me included, won't be able to resist saying why a relationship f**ked up, saying how wonderful you were and what a (bastard he|bitch she) was. Anyway, the list of people who have contributed in this way is long and distinguished. Also, it has to be recognised that writing a diary about how fucked up you are is much better than a lot of the alternatives, including random acts of murder, or suicide.

Don't Do it in other peoples diaries!!

Other peoples diaries are about their experiences, not an excuse for you to trade insults with your ex.

No fighting in the Intro or Title!!

Rants should also be a private affair, so keep it in the body. That way, you actually have to click on the story before you get muddy.

I also suggest that you keep this type of diaries in The Hole or The Whine Cellar. You'll probably mellow out in a couple of centuries and be embarrassed if you find a real Diary entry about what a screaming loony you were is top of the Google search of your name.

It's entirely possible that at some point, you might find yourself the object of someone's hostile diary. A dignified silence to screamed allegations is the best weapon: in the real world you only have to take a look at how Paul McCartney (silent saint) is viewed with respect to Heather Mills (mad trollop). Even if her allegations are true, her presentation has almost guarenteed that she has lost in The Court of Public Opinion. The best answer is to ignore it and you'll find that the hostility will wither if it doesn't have a target. But of course, it is much more fun to us if you start a flamewar as to whose fault it was.

If after reading this, you're determined to continue, I'm sure someone can suggest a list of topics to kick off on.

I'm not taking sides you realise1?

I've had a similar experience on a smaller scale over the weekend, with lots of angry texts going in bioth directions, but which I'm pleased to say has been resolved.

I lied: I have taken sides, but I'm keeping my real opinion to myself. It's more fun that way.

It's not so strange he's the voice of reason. by nightflameblue (4.00 / 5) #9 Tue Jan 15, 2008 at 04:45:09 PM EST
It's strange he's the voice of reason on anything having to do with relationships. That just freaks me out right there.

Maybe next he can write us a detailed missive on how to avoid extra-marital affairs and causing stress for your spouse?

In fact I said carry on, because its more interesting for the rest of us, as long as you're aware of the personal consequences.
