We're going to be parents!

To a 15-year old (16 in two months)!

In TWO WEEKS!!!

We met with her tonight (16 August) for ~3 hours. It was supposed to be ~1.5 hours, but it went well far beyond everyone's wildest expectations. So what had been a three-week plan for her to move in turned into a two-week plan.

Her foster parents are awesome, and have offered whatever support we may (and will) need. This seems a perfect match for us and for her.

She is very small for 15, ~90 lbs and barely 5' tall. We can't stop grinning. I don't think we'll sleep much for the next couple of days.

Wow. Just Wow.

We'll see about that "rule" part. We are at once elated and scared to death.

Taking on a teenage girl. That's, well, quite a commitment to being sulked at and told that WHATEVER YOU SUCK STOP RUINING MY LIFE for no good reason. Also, note, YOUR NOT MY REAL PARENTS.

You are saints.

WHATEVER YOU SUCK STOP RUINING MY LIFE. I WISH YOU WERE NOT MY REAL PARENTS.

Main difference is the 15 year anticipation of it.

Well ya see it's like this.... by Mrs FlightTest (4.00 / 2) #11 Fri Aug 17, 2007 at 10:02:57 AM EST
beings she is a teenager, she has a say in the whole adoption thing & if she doesn't approve of us now, we CAN'T adopt her.
So, if she were ever to say anything of that nature, we can point out that she chose us, so now she is stuck with us for life!!

Wheeee...Flyin` is Fun!!

Yes thats true by codemonkey uk (4.00 / 2) #12 Fri Aug 17, 2007 at 10:21:13 AM EST
But I'm sure she'll say she didn't know what FREAKS you were then.

But hey, any teenager would be the same, I'm sure, with genetic parents, foster parents, step parents or adoptive parents.

You've very brave to do this, it is undoubtedly an act of great kindness to take on an an dependant that's not your kin, let alone an adolescent. It's also understandable that your just a little bit scared.

Only problem is we can't keep firearms in the house while she's still a foster child. I do have several baseball bats however.

So you rate St. Louie better than China Lake, eh? At least China Lake would have seemed more like home.

[ Parent ]

That's a tough call by kwsNI (2.00 / 0) #36 Mon Aug 20, 2007 at 07:19:17 AM EST
Assuming where I grew up is where I'd call home, China Lake is pretty comperable climate and scenery wise, but way too remote to really be the same.  St. Louis on the other hand has those little things you miss like restaurants, malls, theatre, museums, etc.

With that said, I met my wife and got married in St. Louis, bought my first house in St. Louis, all of my closest friends live in St. Louis, so St. Louis is more like home than the place I grew up.  Or more appropriately, I grew up in St. Louis - even if it's not the state I spent the first 21 years of my life.

And the China Lake assignment is still up in the air and I told them I was sick of waiting for them to get their act together.  It's a long story, but it had less to do with choosing STL over CL than choosing a stable position over one that no one knows anything about.

[ Parent ]

Ahhhhh by FlightTest (2.00 / 0) #37 Mon Aug 20, 2007 at 01:47:47 PM EST
Yeah, I was thinking "where you grew up"="home". I guess I didn't know about the other difficulties with CL. I had thought that was essentially a done deal, following the airplane around.

Oh, well. If you're happy in St. Louis, then that's what counts. Maybe we'll get out there some time in the Apache.

[ Parent ]

Yup by kwsNI (2.00 / 0) #38 Mon Aug 20, 2007 at 07:15:01 PM EST
It's still a done deal, I can follow the aircraft around, they just don't know when, if or how long it's going out there.

So we're looking forward to life back in St. Louis.  It's a nice place to live.  Come on out whenever, we've got an extra bedroom (or 3) in the new place.  I want to see the Apache.  I was hoping to get into flight school when we moved back but will probably have to wait a bit again.  This move is once again costing more than we really wanted.

She's never been in a airplane (large or small). She's eager to try it. We're hoping to fly to PA next summer, maybe we can make a stop in WI.

We were just discussing that by FlightTest (2.00 / 0) #31 Sat Aug 18, 2007 at 01:27:31 AM EST
Not right away, obviously. Mommy has a friend she used to work with that she adopted as her big sister. I think we'll start with that, then work on explaining how we adopted you.

Also, you are definitely not imaginary. You are very real and we have photographic proof!

. . . is she from north america, or from somewhere else? Why did the foster parents have to/want to give her up? Details, please!

Foster parents are a "foster home", not an adoptive home. They've fostered 60~70 kids over the years. At first it seems a bit strange, but really without people like that, the process for these kids would be even more nightmarish than it is.
