Some movies are good, some are bad. Some movies are even great. But regardless of their worth overall, some movies have flashes of brilliance. Scenes or arcs within the movie that rise above anything else the movie has to offer. Some of my examples:

The first 15 minutes of Star Wars: Episode 1. I'm telling you, when I was in the theater seeing this for the first time, and Qui Jon and Obi Wan plunged their light sabers into that huge blast door and started cutting it open, I almost lost it. It seems almost quaint to think about it now, but when Episode 1 was first coming out, a lot of us really thought that these were going to be the equal of the original trilogy, and the opening scenes of Qui Jon and Obi Wan just basically being uber-Jedi's and totally owning an entire spaceship full of enemies, I was thinking to myself "Holy Shit this is it". And then of course reality set in, but oh well.

The first ~45 minutes of Office Space. Office Space overall is a great movie, don't get me wrong, but the first half of this movie is so much better than the last half it's not even close. The great divide, of course, is when the trio learns that their Superman 2 plot worked too well. One could even argue that the first ~15 minutes of Office Space is itself a step above the first ~45, specifically the opening scenes of Peter dealing with the things he hates about his office. I've always had a soft spot for "Hypnotized Peter" though, especially "I'm going to go home and watch Kung Fu".

Rescuing Morpheus, The Matrix. Again, Matrix is damn fine all around. But Rescuing Morpheus, from about "We'll need guns", up to and including "Do you belive it now Trinity?", to me when first seeing it is what really sold me on the movie being something special. Even today, if Matrix is on TNT or something, I'll often times watch some if I know that the rescue scene is coming up.

The Cliff Scene, Last of the Mohicans. I think maybe it's the music here that really does it, really sucks you in and slaps you in the face with the mood, and the tradgedy of Uncas' and Alice's death.

The Walk Off, Zoolander. Not the best movie ever although I do kind of like Zoolander as a whole, but the Walk Off scene, starting with Zoolander in the bar (You rock Billy Zane!) to the entrance of David Bowie as walk off judge (Let's Dance!) is good stuff.

The Final Skate, Blades of Glory. Specifically the beginning when they are skating to the theme from Flash Gordon. I actually ended up seeing this movie twice when it was in theaters, once with Jenn and then again with friends who wanted to see it, and hearing that Flash theme come on just cracked me up both times. For that movie, that was the absolute perfect choice for a song.

Others:

The intro of the Dawn of the Dead remake, up to and including the opening credits. Taken by itself, I think it's best zombie movie ever made. The end credits are great too. It's just the part in between that's fairly mediocre.

The first 3/4 of Fantastic Four 2. Lots of fun, with a mounting sense of foreboding. It all falls apart though when Sue gets skewered and the Surfer brings her back from the dead and the movie goes to shit/runs out of money.

The opening sequence to The Hunger. Frankly, I doubt any movie could keep up that level of coolness throughout.

The War of the Worlds remake is spectacular up until the tension breaks and Tom Cruise starts being all Tom Cruise-y, and the movie becomes a dull drag.

Primer is awesome until about 2/3 of the way through, when it gets too clever for its own good and becomes too confusing to follow.

Another I can't believe I forgot by jayhawk88 (2.00 / 0) #2 Fri Aug 17, 2007 at 01:11:22 PM EST
The Indianapolis, Jaws. I've always thought that Scheider and Dreyfuss nailed their respective reactions when they learn that Quinn was on the Indianapolis: Hooper gaining instant respect for Quinn, and Brody with his "Please tell me why this is important" look.

bah, the best zoolander scene by alprazolam (2.00 / 0) #3 Fri Aug 17, 2007 at 03:08:23 PM EST
is when Derek first walks into Hansel's umm home, with the sherpa running around, the half pipe, and everything else. But the trick is to find these scenes in bad movies, like finding a great dish at an otherwise forgettable restaurant. unfortunately i can't ever really remember this stuff, i don't remember lines or scenes from movies at all for the most part, unless they're really good. I'm sure there's a bunch of scenes like that in various Arnold movies (not counting the obvious ones from Conan)...like when he's singing "Yakety Yak" on the plane in Twins  (or is that just me?).

I couldn't walk away from the screen if my hair was on fire.

The dream sequence . . . by slozo (2.00 / 0) #5 Sat Aug 18, 2007 at 04:02:14 PM EST
. . . in Dumb and Dumber, with the fight scene, lighting farts, lifting skirt. I love the movie, but that whole thing was comedy perfection.

As a quickie, I also really liked the surgical strike to the back of the knee Lloyd puts on Harry (or is it the other way around?) when they're walking into that party.

It's Harry on Lloyd . . . by slozo (2.00 / 0) #7 Mon Aug 20, 2007 at 03:35:23 AM EST
. . . after cane fighting, yeah. Purely awesome, punctuated by them getting in the event paying double, then Lloyd spraying breath freshener in the bad guy's face.

My favourite line, though, is from neither of these sequences . . . "Harry . . . you're ALIVE!!! (glances at bad guy, having received 5 shots fired at him, all misses) . . . and you're a horrible shot!"

"I want to make love to a schoolboy" comes in second.
