So after, what, 3 months? I'll finally post this:

[larger]

I'm really not very satisfied with it. Something about the lighting in the photo made this exceedingly difficult. But rather than not posting it ever, here it is.

So at least that's one item in a long list of requests I've managed to check off. Unfortunately, my working style of "try drawing something, be unsatisfied, discard, try something else, repeat until some random thing works for some reason" isn't too condusive to being very productive at specific tasks.

I also finished a short comic for a friend, which he may use as a storyboard for a short film. Not too happy with the quality of it because I used almost no reference whatsoever for it, and it shows. Maybe I'll post it at some point though, because I think it at least tells the story half-decently.

Speaking of comics, I think I'll try to get to this on the weekend.
Has anyone seen the show Dexter? Wow. So now my favourite new show is about a serial killer.

I would love it if my favourite show were a sci-fi, or a superhero type thing, but that just doesn't seem to be where the quality is these days. Although I suppose Dexter could be a superhero, if you look at it a certain way. Anyway, that first season is friggin intense!

Last minute linkage: This guy rocks pretty hard. He's also got some rather insightful things to say about art in general, as well as the tools.

Wow. I never realised what new depths of ugliness there were left to plumb...But a good capture IMHO.
N is going to bust a vessel when she sees this !
Good fun...

Chalk it up to poor drawing. I definitely missed the distinguished gentleman features that were plainly evident in the photo. Just be glad I didn't post one of the earlier versions.

No I mean earlier sketches of this same photo. Those ones really didn't turn out well.

Dexter and the Sci-Fi Thing by Christopher Robin was Murdered (4.00 / 1) #5 Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 12:48:38 PM EST
If the show goes anything like the books, the series will start to creep into sci-fi/fantasy territory.

The third book came out this summer and, unlike the first two (which were dark comedy crime fiction), it includes this whole vaguely supernatural twist having to apparently do with murderous fragments of ancient gods possessing folks and making them serial killers. It was a bit unclear.

Personally, I think the series did a certain something over a specific type of sea-going predator with the third title; but it might bode well if you want a more fantastic twist on the character.

Not sure how I feel about that by spacejack (2.00 / 0) #6 Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 01:41:22 PM EST
The show has won me over on its own merits, and hasn't needed any supernatural elements to explain some of the rather bizarre events that take place. On the other hand, the first season leaves me wondering how they can continue on without becoming repetitive.

Guess I'll need to queue it. by Christopher Robin was Murdered (2.00 / 0) #7 Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 02:27:56 PM EST
I remember reading the first book and thinking that somebody would try to make a movie out of it and it would suck. The books work mostly because of Dexter's narrative voice, which makes him and the world around him weirdly charming and pleasant. I couldn't imagine a film or show pulling off the same thing. I've been surprised to hear such good things about the show.

Dexter is a vampire, silly. by dr k (4.00 / 1) #8 Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 07:00:27 PM EST
But it is a nice spin on the genre.
