and I don't care

The weeds in the back yard are out of control.  Seriously.  It's going to take me months to get things cleaned up by the time I'm "allowed" to.

I went out and pulled a few of the really bad ones -  a couple of the rogue nasty thorny vines started taking hold of the bed near the deck.  Once this particular weed gets established, the only thing you can really do is burn the bed to the ground and start over again.

So there.  I did it.

I desperately want somebody to help out with the weed situation (just the ones in the beds!!!!), but there's no sucker I can think of who would want to do it, especially in this heat.

clock is going to chew me out as soon as he reads this.

Weeds suck. I'm watching our entire burned-to-a-crisp front yard get taken over by weeds yet again. It's an August tradition here.

And with good cause. Hmmm, let's see: Weeds in the back yard, or health and safety of myself and my unborn child? I don't care how many weeds a flower bed has, it's not something a couple of guys with a tiller and a 12 pack can't solve when there's time down the road.

Is it just house arrest? As of today, you're officially sounding more bitter than me. That's OK I suppose, considering your situation, but I hope you're not taking it out on clock...

quite bitter by StackyMcRacky (4.00 / 1) #9 Fri Aug 10, 2007 at 02:01:14 PM EST
it's part house-arrest, part increased pain (more and more pain every. single. day.)

3 weeks of only getting up to pee is not doing much for my mental health.  i'm starting to have more mental breakdowns than before.

i'm doing my very best to not take it out on clock.  he's such an amazing guy, taking everything on like he has.  i'm really the luckiest woman on the planet.  i'm also really worried about his mental state - he's starting to burn out.  :(

it's just general burn-out - this has been going on for 9 months (while I could help before, i was usually too sick to do much other than puke or sleep)

excruciating boredom, except excruciating boredom coupled with physical discomfort, bladder issues and a lack of sleep.

I remember all of this (second hand, obviously) - you have my sympathies. But it will be over soon.

In the grand scheme of things some weeds in the back yard really isn't that big of a deal.

what, you're in texas, aren't there a million day laborer folks hanging around looking for jobs ? Quasi-don't-ask-don't-tell immigration status types ?

You mean the anti-immigration folks are wrong about all that ?

Hey! What a business plan! by greyrat (2.00 / 0) #12 Fri Aug 10, 2007 at 02:03:21 PM EST
  1. Day laborers need to get work. White collar workers need day laborers.
  2. Build website and provide kiosks at day laborer 'hangouts'
  3. ???
  4. Profit!

he never paid attention to the flower beds before, so he's certainly not paying attention now!

no, not passive-aggressive anything.  it was more of a rant for me to let off some steam - that's what the internet's for, right?

how sad it is that it felt good to do something as lame as pull 4 weeds?

this afternoon i'm keeping myself occupied by going through my files and shredding things that need to go (can do this from the couch, so it's legal!)

Can't you get an air mattress and drag it out to the back yard? Then hook a mirror to a pole and mount that on the side. Then mount 4 wheels on it.

This will allow you to lie "in bed" whilst you pull weeds.

Warmest regards,

doesn't stop the weeds by StackyMcRacky (2.00 / 0) #30 Fri Aug 10, 2007 at 02:30:16 PM EST
they grow up through the rocks.  i have a near-impossible place to mow/trim, so i filled the area with rocks so i wouldn't have to deal with it.  i still have to hit the area with round-up every year to keep it clear of plant life.

welcome to Texas! by StackyMcRacky (4.00 / 1) #34 Fri Aug 10, 2007 at 02:52:11 PM EST
the area is only about 1 ft by 2 ft, so pretty small.  i covered it with landscape fabric, then a garbage bag, and then the rocks.  however, over time gunk (technical term here) falls between the rocks.  weeds only need a little bit in order to sprout.

it's pretty crazy.  clock is constantly amazed at how the foliage is so totally different here than up north (where he's lived all his life).

Sorry that your going so nuts. by paperdoll (2.00 / 0) #33 Fri Aug 10, 2007 at 02:41:54 PM EST
I understand not being able to take the weeds any longer though.  We have a siberian elm problem here and if I spy one in the yard I am compelled to pull it right then regardless of what I was doing.

exactly! by StackyMcRacky (4.00 / 1) #36 Fri Aug 10, 2007 at 02:53:37 PM EST
most of the weeds are just unsighly, but there are a few that once esatablished...you're doomed.

my yard has a BIG problem with sweet gum treelets popping up everywhere.  they're really hard to pull once they hit a certain size.  and then they grow into full-on trees.

I'd ignore them even if I weren't on bedrest. If yer gonna break curfew, do it for fun stuff;)

But then I was pretty comfortable with having thistles taller than me in the garden.

We have a policy of - to some extent - Darwinian landscaping. We do try to give the prettier weeds a hand up by digging up the less-pretty weeds.

and it's not nesting - i hate having such a weedy yard pregnant or not.  of course, i usually never let it get this bad.....and i also usually have better things to do than look out the window all day long.  in fact, i haven't had the "nesting" thing yet.

Bad Stacky by notafurry (2.00 / 0) #47 Fri Aug 10, 2007 at 06:30:55 PM EST
Also, please note - life with baby does change some priorities. We still go out and have fun and do things, albeit not quite the same as we used to, but many of our priorities have completely reversed. My yard and garden has one characteristic that satisfies my needs for this year; it's short. All else is irrelevant for the time being. Maybe next year we'll worry about it again.

I am surprised though that with the population of concerned ecology people around here so many have manicured and artificial lawns. WTF? Why not more small gardens and native growth? Easier maintenance and better for the environment...

darwinism - if i have to maintain them much, they die and i replant with something else.

it's the tree-weeds and the vines that choke everything else out that i'm concerned with.

I waited several hours in the dealership waiting room to get my car repaired while "on bedrest" and went to the supermarket and sam's club. There was no one else to do it.

My last sam's club trip while pregnant was when I was in early labor and just had to buy a fishing pole for the ex for his birthday...a month later.

The checkout girl said that I looked like I was about to pop and I didn't dare say that I was feeling contractions right then.
