Streaking

Wife’s Job

The wife’s job is not good.  Her boss appears to be crazy, insecure, and quick to toss out the blame and write people up.  When challenged with another point if view she is somewhat humane, until the next bump in the road, wash rinse repeat.  The company I’ve known for a while is crazy.  People bailing out right and left, a wonderful culture of bitching about anyone / everyone.

She is finally coming to the conclusion that she needs to GTFO.  Let’s hope she’ll actually do it.  She gets pretty down when work stuff turns south.  She’s a good woman but her lack of self confidence seems to lead to some career problems.  Not confidant enough look for a good job or apply for good ones when they are there.  Not confidant enough to put up with crappy situations and get frustrated by them enough to give up hope.

Self esteem is a ####.  I’m her husband, I should be able to help with that right?  I think it is only something the person with the issue can fix.

MovieTalk: The Departed

I enjoyed The Departed.  There was an undercurrent of “guilt” but not explored to the extent that I thought the the Ebert review seemed to indicate, but it was a good movie.  Plenty of fun twists and turns, good acting.  Too bad because the ending sucked ass…  There are plenty of excuses that can be tossed out regarding the ending but they’re just that, excuses.  Fact is the ending didn’t make much sense.

The premise that because Costigan's record was deleted by Sullivan so he would not be thought of as an actual criminal was BS IMO.  As if it was stripped from some sci fi fick.  Dignam was still around yet Costigan's attempt to get him involved seemed totally impractical to the point of being a plot device to effect the eventual outcome.  If the FBI was involved in the background with Costello then Costigan might have been able to run to them with the info he had.  Oh and the therapist, what she just moves on with her life after all she knows . . .?  The ending was just too ridiculous.

Photography: Flash

That’s it I’ve had enough.  I don’t use flash.  I just don’t.  Natural light looks better but there are times and places where I wish I had a flash.  Even when using the 50mm 1.4.  No not the built in flash on my camera (no no no no).  So I’m finally going to break down and buy a Canon 430EX Speedlite, and some diffuser of course.   I give in!

Streaking
People who run onto the field of play with their clothing on during sporting events should be shot.  Not because they’re wasting everyone’s time, but because there is a perfectly acceptable alternative.  Streaking.

I don’t mind if my sporting event is interrupted by a streaker.  In fact I respect those people.  If they’re ugly I don’t have to look closely, and heck they get some extra points of respect from me.  There’s not enough streaking these days, at least in the U.S.  Something must be done.  Hell if I’m going to be the one to do it.  Sadly none of the political candidates has yet voiced their opinion on streaking.

Busy Weekend

It is going to be a busy weekend.  The mother is in town, the sister is moving, a bunch of friends are visiting to see the other friends visiting with the new baby and three year old.  Need a bigger house.

If someone streaked in a dark room, would you use the internal flash in your camera?

Self esteem is an internal issue by georgeha (4.00 / 1) #3 Tue Jul 24, 2007 at 07:23:44 PM EST
a dire one, too, and it's real hard for an external person to raise it.

the more an external person by LilFlightTest (4.00 / 1) #4 Tue Jul 24, 2007 at 08:09:22 PM EST
can show her she's worth it, the better she'll feel about her self. it takes time, but every extra person that shows her helps. it's being surrounded by people who don't ever show appreciation that sucks.

I think so by duxup (2.00 / 0) #9 Wed Jul 25, 2007 at 11:10:57 AM EST
Part of it seems to be trying to help her strike a balance when working with asses at work.  Unfortunately, I'm the "I don't give a damn what that prick thinks!" kind of guy.  I still get along with the workplace jerks.  In fact I make an extra effort with them.  At the same time I so don't care if they complain about me at work, and I don't take any of it personally.  It's hard to empathize and help with someone who does.

you try not to, but one can really only handle getting shit on by everyone for just so long.

Even I couldn't survive where she is for that long.  Of course I wouldn't have stayed, but she takes it fells like she's a bad person and stays thinking nowhere else would work.  It's a vicious cycle.

Fortunatly, it should be ending.  She's set on resigning.

i put up with it for over a year, and when it got worse in the last few months, eventually there came a point where i just said screw it.

if she wants more encouragement, and/or to talk to someone who just went through what she is, i'm available.

sometimes people like that have to be nudge to try even though failure seems most likely.

A real flash... by wiredog (4.00 / 1) #7 Wed Jul 25, 2007 at 08:00:30 AM EST
One of the really nice thing about modern cameras is how well the flash integrates with the camera systems. It used to be that fill in flash required a reasonable amount of calculation, depending on the amount of natural light, the power of the flash, the range to the target, speed of the film. I had a circular slide rule to help set shutter speed and aperture. I rarely used fill flash.

Today I just attach the flash to the camera and fire away. The camera takes care of all the calculations for me. You don't really need a diffuser, either.

I hear you there by duxup (2.00 / 0) #8 Wed Jul 25, 2007 at 11:06:27 AM EST
I remember reading articles about using flash long ago.  O-U-C-H.  Not to say photography is all that complicated but adding the problems of figuring out how to use the flash . . . oh man I just don't need that.

I very much look FW to pouring over the manual, and then being allowed to forget most of it and at least get some humane photos.

From what I've read many people seem to still suggest a diffuser.  Fortunatly this is just a couple bucks to slap a piece of plastic on it and play with it so I won't feel too bad if I end up realizing I don't need it.

Diffuser,,, by Metatone (4.00 / 1) #10 Wed Jul 25, 2007 at 11:13:38 AM EST
is one of those things it's good to get into the habit of using, not because you need it every time, but because otherwise you won't have it (or won't use it) that 10% of the time when it really helps.

And it rarely hurts, except when you need more light than you can pump through it.

Will do by duxup (2.00 / 0) #11 Wed Jul 25, 2007 at 11:32:20 AM EST
I plan on doing a fair amount of experimenting with and without to see how it goes.  Being way new to flash I'm going to have to play around quite a bit I think.
