So, I've been biking to/from work everyday, plus other sundry errand biking and weekend fun bikes. Minimally around sixteen miles a day. The odometer I bought a week or two after starting has almost 400 miles on it at this point. Also, there were two weeks of business travel in there. Which sucks for keeping in the habit, but I picked it up again fine after the last one (last week) so a week off doesn't seem to hurt too much.
Some random rants:
- Attention
poison-spewing behemothcar drivers: you know that lever that if you push one way turns on a little blinky light on one side and the other side turns on another blinky light? Oh, and there is an annoying clicking noise when you do this? This lever is to telegraph your intentions as to lane positions and turns. Please use this lever more often. It makes it easier for me not to run into you when all of a sudden you cut in front of me. - I am a lawbreaker. Specifically, if there is a stop sign in some residential (or very low traffic area) and there are no cars to conflict with, I am just slowing down and then proceeding. I do stop at lights and at stop signs with traffic. Why can't there be more yield signs over stops? It's not like anyone actually stops at them (including cars).
- Attention road maintenance people: please make sure that lights actually trigger with a bike stopped. Also, please make sure the light stays green long enough for the bike to get more than 10 feet into the intersection. Also, please FUCKING SWEEP the damn streets so there aren't piles of glass and gravel in the fucking bike lane (and worse in the bike lane at stop lights).
- Drivers need to get a grip. Yes, I am in your lane. This does not mean the following are appropriate reactions:
- follow slowly behind me instead of passing in either the adequately wide lane or in the lane to the left.
- leaving like four car lengths between us when stopped behind me at a light.
- creeping up behind me at a light and thinking my presence in the bike lane or the right of the "thru" lane blocks you from making a right turn.
- honking at me to "warn" me that you're there.
- honk at me for non-apparent reasons, but appear to be a form of catcalling. um, I guess that's actually okay.
Work
Work sucks. A lot. Insanely a lot. So much so that had I not had responsibilities I would be close to delivering ultimatums about my work assignments.
O.S.H.
This project is mostly just bike riding / physical fitness / eating better. There is some other stuff involving grooming I won't go into. Side note: the spin brush toothbrush things are awesome.
Politics
So, um, maybe the Democrats have grown a spine? Media is still pretty fucked up though.
Also, per slozo, I agree that there are more things to be thinking about than our own petty problems. Doesn't mean it doesn't hurt still. But, it does drive me towards finding something more meaningful to do with my life than making it cheaper and faster for us to buy shit by credit card on our cellphones.
