I propose lunch on Thursday at the usual dim sum place. 12:30ish. My mother will be in town, and wants to try the "cart place" (she can't seem to remember the phrase 'dim sum'). Having others along who recognize the dumplings would be both helpful and enjoyable.

I'm pretty sure I have a staff meeting from 11-12 on Thursday (which really means 11:15-12:15), but we might be able to make it a bit earlier, if that suits people.

Unrelated (incredibly boring) blather within.

It seems that I had some interesting things to talk about, but all of that seems to have vanished from my head. So a couple of uninteresting things instead.
  • Yesterday was the first softball game of the season. I remember every year just how much I enjoy playing. I had one good base hit (and one dribbler to the second baseperson for an out). Pitched three for one strike out, one walk, and two (I think) runs, so not so bad. Sadly, we lost by one run - 11-10. ana is playing on the team this year, too, instead of only acting as official scorekeeper, and got a base hit as well, and an assist on an out. Today, though, ana is complaining of sore quads.

  • Our trip to Madison last weekend was lots of fun, and I'm really glad I got the opportunity to see where ana lived and studied and worked. The trip reminded me of just how much I enjoy hanging out with my partner. I think we need to get away from the routines of home from time to time and just hang out.

  • Friday, I got a grant submitted - the last for a little while. The best thing is that the proposal wasn't due until Monday, so perhaps my goal of not procrastinating is actually working.

  • I'm planning to take vacation time while my mom is here. I'm actually really looking forward to being away from work for a little while to recharge and perhaps dispel some of my burned-outedness. Sometimes, I need to give myself permission to not be on-call, I think, even though it's extremely difficult for me to let go.

  • I'm reading the second of Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next novels. It's a surprisingly excellent read. The books are set in an alternate universe where dodos have been brought back to life as pets, where there is an entire law enforcement division devoted to literary fiction, and the heroine is not so very different from any other strong female PI-type person. In the first book, she quite literally went into Jane Eyre, and the plot synopsis made it seem far too cute and precious for my taste (also, $office_mate liked it, and she and I have very different tastes). The books are awesome, though.

  • If you haven't seen Paprika, please fix.

  • My 11-year old cat has been extremely cuddly recently. Yesterday morning, I woke up with him pushing against the back of my neck with his head, purring loudly. I had been pushed mostly off the pillow so that all 20 lbs. of him could use my pillow (even though ana's pillow was not being used). It wasn't exactly comfortable, but it was very sweet.

I wonder, then ... by BlueOregon (4.00 / 1) #1 Sun Jul 01, 2007 at 03:46:30 PM EST

... whether an ivy league weight-lifting squad should be called the Harvard (or Radcliffe) Quads. I would like to play softball, sort of, but I'd rather play soccer -- I dreamed/dreamt of it the other night. Back at Pomona we had the annual math vs. physics soccer match, you see.

As for Paprika, it is not, alas, yet showing in Madtown :(

But I'm waiting for it. Awaiting it. I can't wait.

in my day, that was Madcity. Which sounds just a bit more like the real-life name of the place.

Sounds good to me.

Yay for not procrastinating, and also for the idea of time off. I know what you mean about being not on-call; I tend to manage it by telling myself that something else is more important -- which spending time with your mom, without work distraction, is. Usually it's the anxiety before the fact that's worse -- once I actually manage to let go I find it's quite painless :)

Awesome! by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #5 Sun Jul 01, 2007 at 06:42:36 PM EST
I'm glad you'll be able to make it. And IAWTP about letting go. It's important for my longterm job sanity as well that I don't let myself get burned out.

mm and I saw Paprika last night by R343L (2.00 / 0) #6 Sun Jul 01, 2007 at 07:28:29 PM EST
While I thought it was good, I still class quite a few animes above it. That said, it had awesome music, very cool visuals, if not such a coherent plot (but what did I expect?) However, millman and I both laughed quite hard at certain things. Funny and/or interesting bits: In any case, certainly worth my Saturday night (well a couple things would be slightly better, but given the options I had ...)

Well worthwhile. by ana (2.00 / 0) #7 Sun Jul 01, 2007 at 07:52:58 PM EST
We'd be interested in your faves among Anime movies, cuz we probably haven't seen them.

I've liked pretty by R343L (2.00 / 0) #8 Sun Jul 01, 2007 at 08:38:23 PM EST
much everything by Miyazaki, but then most people at least tolerate his stuff. Spirited Away though is my favorite there.

Part of my problem here is that when I was "into" it, I was friends with some anime freaks and we went to campus anime showings ... and I rarely remembered the names. And anime can be very expensive so I haven't bought that much since then. Guess I should netflix more, no?

That said, I like:

  • Blue Seed
  • Early Ranma 1/2 (haven't seen a lot of later Ranma and it went on forever).
  • Vampire Hunter D (the dialogue can be pretty cheesy honestly, but visuals are awesome).
  • Ghost in the Shell (either the original movie or the new series)
  • Evangelion (but everyone recs this one)
  • Macross Plus
  • Record of Lodoss War
  • Full Metal Alchemist
  • Wolf's Rain
  • Cowboy Bebop
  • Witch Hunter Robin
Somewhat so-so:
  • Tenchi Muyo. Just too cutesy most of the time, although you'd think I would really like it.
  • Maisson Ikkoku
  • Kimagure Orange Road
  • Inu Yasha (which I only include here because I've seen umpteen episodes on Adult Swim)
Note that I have seen Akira and if you haven't, don't bother. There are probably others in this category, but ... :) Oh, and in case it needed to be said, I would not bother with Card-captor Sakura, or any of that genre. Oh and I never found Dragonball remotely interesting, so ...

Thank you. by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #9 Sun Jul 01, 2007 at 08:50:29 PM EST
I've seen Spirited Away, and I loved it, but I haven't seen much else besides that (and Paprika, of course). I've been meaning to see My Neighbor Totoro and Howl's Moving Castle (especially that one - yay Diane Wynne Jones). Kind of like comics, though, I'm coming to anime way late, so direction is good! I've found that I like how, at least in Spirited Away and Paprika, Japanese animation people seem to understand that they can take the time to tell a story without something (joke, action, whatever) having to happen in every shot.

Howl's Moving Castle by mrgoat (4.00 / 1) #10 Mon Jul 02, 2007 at 09:07:08 AM EST
Is quite excellent. If you loved Spirited Away, you surely will love Howl's Moving Castle.

I was going to mention that one by R343L (4.00 / 1) #18 Wed Jul 04, 2007 at 11:50:17 PM EST
I actually love it almost as much as Spirited Away .. but in many ways it has less depth and is almost a shojo in its romantic-ey stuff.

It's also one of the few that I like better in English than in Japanese (mostly because I could listen to Christian Bale talk about tiling and be enthralled).

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, while its animation is dated, is a fantastic story.

Princess Mononoke has the most serious, adult storyline, and is very well done.

Totoro is cute.

Kiki's Delivery Service is a good movie for preteen girls.

Ninja Scroll.  I loved it.  The movie, not the spinoff series.

I'm also fond of the Samuari X OVA. Cute love story, nice animation.

20 pounds of lard, begins to purr, and then scratches your arm off, or bites down, hard, on a finger or whatever else is handy.

I picked Simon out of his litter... by toxicfur (4.00 / 1) #15 Wed Jul 04, 2007 at 01:37:28 PM EST
when he was 8 days old. He hissed at me, and I fell in love. When my ex and I split up, I got to keep the cats because Simon attacked my ex's new girlfriend every time she'd come into the apartment. He also loves to cuddle, and his favorite spot when I sleep in in the morning is curled up against my head, purring. So ana's right. He's both. :-)
