nous sommes les singes.

So, yesterday I installed the Feisty Fawn thing in the 64bit incarnation. It basically works, but I have some issues getting the screen resolution I want. Also, several things do not like the 64bitness, including Skype and Flash Player. The wireless networking seems fine.

Not having used it for a few years, I had forgotten how cool apt-get is.

Something is less fine with the XP install. Yet again an OS file got corrupted and I had to repair from the CD (which takes ages - much longer than installing Lunix). Disk checking etc. tells me the HDD is fine. Will do some more tests this evening. Somewhere I have a copy of the Ultimate Boot CD which, I recall, has a bunch of utils on it. I think something is still wrong with the XP install, but not a Windows file. Really don't want to have to install everything all over again, but it might be the only choice. I suppose it could be some sort of malware but I installed the Norton shite that came with the motherboard. Actually that's giving me as much trouble as malware would.

The other problem with installing Windows all over again is that it will overwrite Grub and I'll then have to install Lunix again.

Supposed to be finishing this estimate today. My strategy is:

  • Assuming that we are allowed 6 months
  • Count the number of use-cases
  • Divide that into 6 months
  • Document that each use case is estimated to take that duration to develop
It's very scientific.

Actually, why the hell am I doing planning and estimating anyway?

What with Kubuntu and stuff, I have reached 75% of my download allowance for this month. That's a first. I did see that Be There are offering ADSL2+ from my local exchange which , for £40 a month, gives allegedly unlimited downloads with an alleged downstream bandwidth of 24Mb/s and an alleged upstream bandwidth of 2.5Mb/s with fixed IPs. Hmmm. Maybe wait for VDSL.

Uninstall the Norton, get the free AVG stuff instead, it's a lot less annoying.

AVG misfired yesterday by ad hoc (2.00 / 0) #19 Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 06:18:05 AM EST
causing me a bit of panic. The 25-Apr definitions update alert a false positive for WS_FTP Pro 2007. It still does for 2007.0.0.0, you need the 2007.0.0.2 point release.

I got a misfire on a custom app from one of my clients the other day. That freaked me out a bit.

But Norton slows my system to a crawl. Hell, I swear my entire life (even away from the computer) gets slower when Norton is installed.

You don't need to by yicky yacky (4.00 / 2) #3 Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 01:55:24 AM EST

do anything so extreme as reinstalling linux. It's a muh-fuhing modular system, ferchrissakes ("Easy" distros, my arse</Royle>). You just need to rewrite the first grub stage on to the MBR after Windows over-writes it. Your linux install disk probably has an option to allow booting an already-installed OS. Just boot that and then read the grub manual.

It's so easy that I've done it, and that's saying something.

It's the re-installation of Windows that's the major hassle.

Feisty Fucker was much quicker to install by Herring (2.00 / 0) #9 Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 02:33:55 AM EST
Windows takes at least an hour plus at least the same again to put hardware drivers on. Since Lunix doesn't support the hardware, you don't waste time installing drivers.

OK, it doesn't support my ASIO card, but that's only to be expected. I know someone is working on a driver though.

I was going to say that by Cloaked User (4.00 / 2) #10 Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 02:59:06 AM EST
I can't think of a single Linux install disk set that I've used that didn't have an option to either boot an existing install, or at worst switch to a different vt and get at the current install that way.

Actually, that's what reminded me of their existence and caused me to go to their website and put my phone number in (without any great hope of success).

Seems a bit harsh on the lad, but then he didn't have to publish the passwords.

I can't really justify £40 a month on what is, basically, a bandwidth dick-waving contest. I currently get about 6MB/s and many websites can't supply stuff at that speed.

Posting the passwords ? Cretin. It was the fact that they didn't then patch their servers afterwards.

Yeah, I get ~6Mbps, and am often still waiting for some sites. I also suspect that Pipex are throttling the link as I often only get ~2.5Mbps after being online for a while.

Very difficult and annoying to tailor properly  - it can often go far beyond the laws of diminishing returns unless fully automated which decreases effectiveness. I suspect you just experience contention.

I not too concerned. I'm usually only online for that long when I'm gaming or working from home. But it is annoying.

Estimating by jimgon (4.00 / 1) #13 Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 03:25:16 AM EST
The only accepted approach is to take the target date that management has already given you, subtract the amount of time that the QA folks have already told you they need to test, then break into weeks and mulitply by 40. Assuming you are salaried and realize that it makes no sense to put more than forty hours into your timesheet, this should be close to your actual usage.

It's very scientific and from my vast store of project management experience.

Probably the registry got hosed. You'll have to reinstall everything.

Been on it since December (64 bit, dual core hotness, oh yeah). You can get flash working in one of two ways: install 32 bit browser + 32-bit compatibility libs OR install flash & nspluginwrapper. Skype you have to do 32 bit compat libraries I believe (which is how I got Opera working and my co-workers informed me that Skype worked the same way).

Been liking it -- avoiding the windows boot except when I have to for work things.
