It's an 'eron, innit? In this case, fishing in the Water of Leith in Edinburgh.

I don't remember any actual fish in the water of Leith.  Not ones you'd want to eat anyhow.  Even if you are a non-discerning heron.

Nice pic.

I saw a few open cans of Tennents in there by stark (2.00 / 0) #3 Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 06:10:43 AM EST
Perhaps it was filtering out the booze?

That's rather well lit... by Metatone (2.00 / 0) #2 Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 06:03:47 AM EST
it fairly zings off the screen. As usual, I'm impressed.

Thanks! by stark (4.00 / 1) #4 Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 06:13:15 AM EST
It's a combination of my lovely 70-200L lens, and cheating. I used the dodge or burn tool (can never remember which is which) to darken the background to make it a little less distracting.

Of course the natural sunlight, being filtered through the trees, was pretty helpful as well...

They're actually much easier to photograph in more urban situations. I saw loads of them while on a boat going across the largest lake in the Balkans, but could I get as close as I can at home, on the motorway run-off drainage lake just by the RAC HQ in Walsall?

But that is a really nice photo. I take it it's up towards Dean Village, or near the National Portrait Gallery?

A little further down by stark (2.00 / 0) #7 Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 08:20:12 AM EST
very close to St Bernard's Well.

This heron was extremely well-disposed to just hanging around while I took photos. I think I got within about eight feet of it without it getting flighty.

Still in the nice parts of town, then. by ambrosen (2.00 / 0) #9 Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 12:20:27 PM EST
I really like it higher up near Colinton and Balerno, too. I guess that's why I think of the Water of Leith being really nice, because I've hardly ever been near it in Leith (well, I've walked it at least once, but still...)

It just jumps off the screen, doesn't it.  Should we assume you're warming up for the challenge?  I haven't started anything yet, though I do have a few ideas.  Unfortunately a few of them require a purchase of a new  macro lens for my Olympus E-510, which is not exactly in the budget at the moment.

This is among my favourite animal shots, taken last year during a backpacking trip in the BC rockies.  This guy is about the size of a medium sized dog, and did not sit still for very long!
