And, lo, it was done.

It took, however, a good deal more effort than one would have thought was necessary. First, the mower had to be taken apart due to it not starting. This was followed by a string of curses because there was no apparent cause for why it would not start. That was then followed by the calling of relatives to see if they could bring their mower over for me to use as I put my mower back together.

At which point the mower decided to start working.

But only long enough for me to realize that part of the problem was the safety bar had to be jimmied because the metal pull string wasn't sliding up and down its plastic shaft. And thus, certain relatives had to be called back to let them know that the mower was now going. Which eventually let to having lunch with my mother after I got the yard done.

What was supposed to only take me a half hour to do turned into an hour and half delving into my half-remembered eighth-grade shop class wherein I had to rebuilt a single-stroke mower engine from the ground up.

My hands finally stopped smelling of gasoline later that night.

On one level I accept that to live in our world you have to be part Renaissance Man in order to get anything done. But it, by no means, make me entirely satisfied to have to be such.

The previous comment on society was partially spurred by finding episodes of Connections and The Day the Universe Changed out on the GooTube.

I admit to no small fascination to his coupling of events in the world. It would be nice to have it on video one of these days.

The rest of the weekend was busy with friends and family.

A birthday party on Saturday night was fun to hang out and get the gaming geek on. The game was Monsters Menace America! and the one drawback I can say about it, is that it needs more. It has six possible monsters to play, but is only geared towards a max of four players. This seems off. I mean, if you have six possible players, why not include everything for those six players? Why cut it back to only four? You can only have more fun with more monsters!

There was also a celebration and going away party for my cousin who has joined the coast guard. She graduated from her boot-camp last week and got some leave time to come home and prepare what she could to get ready for her first assignment. The family got her a brand new laptop to take with her. Actually, it was going to be hers whether or not she made it. It was more for her getting out of her home town and actually trying to do something with her life. She has to go back to Virgina soon to ship out on her first assignment.

It is different seeing someone else go through making the same sort of choices I had to make not so long ago. Hopefully they will end up being the right ones.

That was a fun series. I remember the suits he wore were almost definitions of 70's Bad Fashion.

Earth First!
(We can strip mine the rest later.)

Those suits of his do not just belong by MartiniPhilosopher (4.00 / 1) #2 Mon Apr 23, 2007 at 09:06:16 AM EST
to the bad fashion of the 70s. They belong to the bad fashion of all times. As a stern, very stern warning of things not to do.
