After the failed attempt to buy a replacement motherboard for the computer at home, it seems to actually be behaving itself OK. I still get the interference sometimes when doing heavy MIDI playback, but mixdowns seem to come out clear. Where the computer positioned is next to the conservatory (which faces south). On a sunny day, even in winter, it gets really hot in there. This seems to increase the chances of the computer randomly re-setting. More evidence for the temperature theory.

I do intend to give up smoking sometime soon - before it's pretty much outlawed. A month's cigarette money would go a long way towards a socket AM2 MB and a dual-core chip. Anyone got any comments on that? I have 2GB of DDR400 RAM which I don't really want to throw away.

Not looking for a gaming machine, but something that can handle audio and video editing nicely would be good. Especially if it has 3 PCI slots or Firewire so I can plug the video camera back in and actually do some editing.

I did plan to get some footage of people riding at the Quayside last year and put that together, but, yet again, I never got around to it. If you make your own wakeboard videos, you don't have to adhere to the convention of at least one jump-cut per second.

I just had the following conversation with a colleague:
C: "Is there a way to find out what server a database is on?"
H: "Yes. Ask $DBA"
C: "No, I meant a technical way"
H: "Yes, e-mail $DBA"
I am so helpful.

Apparently today is Internet Safety day or something. So no lemonparty links, no grooming and no spamming. OK?

Charlie Brooker trolls Mac users. With some success.

Intarweb pervs having to register e-mail addresses because we know how hard it is to get a new e-mail address.

Tony says nobody is planning to attack Iran. And we all believe him.

Thought you'd been to the dentist for a minute by nebbish (2.00 / 0) #1 Tue Feb 06, 2007 at 07:42:25 AM EST
I was thinking of sending that Charlie Brooker article to a friend but I worried it might destroy him.

Dentist? by Herring (2.00 / 0) #2 Tue Feb 06, 2007 at 07:46:46 AM EST
Not for many years. My last dentist kept nagging me about smoking so I stopped going.

Marathon Man is still a cool film though.

Worried about red wine staining your teeth? Simply drink a bottle of white wine before going to bed.

More on motherboards. by wumpus (4.00 / 1) #3 Tue Feb 06, 2007 at 07:49:16 AM EST
The difference between a 939 socket and the AM2 socket is that AM2 supports DDR2. Don't know if thats compatible with your DDR400.

PS. Since everyone knows Them is lead by the Antichrist himself, They got my vote.

That's what I gathered by Herring (2.00 / 0) #6 Tue Feb 06, 2007 at 07:55:42 AM EST
If I want to keep my RAM, then it's socket 939. Doesn't seem much of an advance though - could just look harder for a socket 754 and keep my existing processor. Then maybe upgrade "properly" in a year or so.

I just want the thing to work reliably. Or more reliably anyway.

The adverts by hulver (2.00 / 0) #13 Tue Feb 06, 2007 at 11:21:12 AM EST
The article is slating the very adverts that appeared when I read it.

The toolbar is the "Web Developer" tool bar. It's a bitch to find on the extension site, but it's one of the best I've used.

so I hadn't noticed the irony.

And, and BTW, I thought on Safe Intarweb Day you would turn the auto lemonparty/goatse function off. Think of the children!

They should be first of all actually monitoring convicted paedos properly whilst on probation but the Home Office isn't competent or well funded enough to do that basic task.

Typical Nu Labour. Headline chasing tosh whilst failing to get to grips with the real problems.

but clearly the answer is for the ID card to have a public/private key incorporated. Then you can force ISPs to use it for login, use it for access to NHS services, benefits etc. Make it like an RFID thing and sensors in streetlamps can track you everywhere ...

And the best part, from the governments perspective, it would mean giving billions more pounds of our money to EDS/Crapita/whoever.

Let's jsut hope nobody gives them the idea.

It's us who are in desperate peril.

Enjoyed Charlie Brooker's telly show last night, he's a bitter laugh riot.
