HOLY MOLEY! I NEED A WOMAN!!

Good; glad to have got your attention.

As mentioned, I need a woman. Just getting any woman will not be good enough, however.

I need a woman who:

can sing
has a naturally high-ish register
can manage a range between A4 and A5 [see comments] (come on, that's only an octave; ObHowHardCanItBe?)
sounds like heaven-with-bells-on (we're prepared to work with some leeway on this one)
has the facility and ability to record herself singing (in a highish-quality, digital format) and get said data to me.
wants her name attached to an MFC entry, without having to do very much work at all.
Can work without lyrics (i.e. lalala, doo-doo-doo, Mmm-mmm-mmm etc.)

Being an interstellar harmonic sex-bomb siren isn't obligatory, but if you've got it, why hide it?

If you think you've got what it takes, apply within (otherwise your part risks being replaced by a synthesizer or piano, and that would be a d'yam shame).

I promise there won't be any weird time signatures or strange beats to worry about (OK - I might be lying about the beats - but you won't have to worry about them, they'll be added later).

The story is thus: Last night I spent a bit of time playing around with an idea for MFCX. It seems to work — with a bass-y male vocal taking one of the melodies. A harmonious level was arranged over the top, and lo!; it sounded alright. "That would sound better as a female vocal", said a friend. Curses: She's right. And here we are.

If you're up for it, I'll send you a loop with what should be the vocal harmony being played by something else. You can then listen to this and record yourself singing along.

None of the immediately available women can sing (either that, or they're pretending not to), so I'm in the market. Any takers?

In fact, it sounds fairly horrible — and getting completely different voices on the same track always adds something, I think. And besides, I hate the sound of time-stretched pitch-shifting, which would mean that you'd have to pitch the track down, sing slow, then speed it back up for it to sound OK. And besides (the IInd), I'm using a variation of that trick on another track with someone else.

If nobody's up for it, I'll just use a piano; it sounds OK as-is.

whatever they did in garageband works quite well (if not quite in real time). It shifts octaves without notable side effects, or changing the speed of things. I seem to recall my brother doing research on this in the 80s when he worked for his graduate EE advisor at a startup. Dunno if anything ever came of it.

and I think it sounds funny. It is ok for thickening up a chorus by shifting it a fourth or so, but not if the vocal is at the same volume as the lead voice. I had to turn down the volume on that line so the oddness of it didnt intrude.

I might be able to falsetto that for you. That's high enough that I won't have to break back and fourth, and although it won't sound female, I can at least make it sound counter-tenor-ee-ish.

I may take you up on that. It's Saturday, though, so I doubt many people will see this for a while. Part of the problem with doing production is that you spend so long hearing the same thing run round that you become habituated to it, and the piano's starting to sound good to me now.

However: I have the makings of another counter-harmony running, so I may be in touch anyway, either about that, or about the original high harmony if no genuine women come out of the woodwork. Thanks.

Just so you know, I'm a baritone by nature and can easily do most bass parts. My tenor is poor and tends to crack, but once I pop over into falsetto, I think I sound pretty good -- or at least my tone and volume up there is consistent.

And since msrat wants to have as little to do with me as possible right now (and she'll be on a business trip next Tuesday and Wednesday) I have the free time and space to work on this.

I have the oboe's A 440 Hz, the one above middle C. I can never remember if that's A4 or not.

not even pushing the top of my range, it seems to be the very limit of a versatile alto. i could be wrong, but that's how it feels to me.

my range tops out at about A4 then, on that scale. Which is the one the oboe plays to tune an orchestra. Hence my above smoke and mirrors utterance, re: 440 Hz.

Whilst A4 to A5 (I had to look this up, but A above middle C, A above high C is how I know that octave) is right in my singing range, I should say was in my singing range. I haven't sung in any kind of careful way in 10+ years.

Also, no recording equipment. Also, I hate the sound of my voice on recordings, even back when I was told I actually could sing and sounded good.

But as you have other takers, I'm not going to offer. :)
