He asked the question.  She didn't have an answer.

One of the guys at work asked the girl who says she is a Christian.  He simply asked her what being a Christian means.  She couldn't or wouldn't answer the question.  I just remained silent.  Simply, the answer is to be "Christ-Like."  She just getting frustrated and  blurted something out about being "Obedient."  It is so obvious that where-ever she goes to church, they are telling her what to believe but not why she believes it.  Blind faith.  Sheeple.

I feel so enlightened to have left that kind of lifestyle behind.  I stepped away from the church several years ago but felt guilt for a long time.  Rizzo would ask me questions about my beliefs and I would get flustered and not be able to answer him  (At least not to his need for facts.) He would then, explain why I couldn't answer the question.  It pissed me off then that he was right...now I get it.

For me, the change in my beliefs came after reading "Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown.  I realize it was a work of mostly fiction, but it gave me a completely different point of view of the church.  I wasn't brought up Catholic, but Pentecostal.

Angels and Demons is about as realistic by debacle (4.00 / 1) #1 Mon Feb 12, 2007 at 07:42:33 PM EST
As 'The Jews did WTC,' and should have no basis on your faith.

Then again, whatever. Anyone who utters the word 'sheeple' needs to be sterilized with a reciprocating saw and then immolated. How exactly has your life changed as a result of you going from being a non-practicing Christian to an admitted non-practicing Christian?

If you've never experienced it, I can't explain it to you.

So explain it to me.

I was brought up in a church (cult) where I was expected to take ANYTHING that was said to me as Gospel.  If I questioned anything, I was punished.  So, basically, the beliefs of the church were pounded into me (sometimes literally) and I believed blindly. Later on, I left the church but always felt guilt and knew that I was going to hell.  It wasn't simply being an admitted non-practicing Christian.  It was coming to the realization that God isn't the entity behind the Church's need for control.  God wasn't going to literally strike me down.  It was the church.  It took a long time for me to realize that most of the things I was taught weren't fact.

I had a minister who claimed that God told him I was going to die within three days.  Well, this was about ten years ago.  It was shortly after that I left the church.  Even after that, people follow him blindly.

Angels and Demons was just a book I picked up.  At the time, it meant more.  I'm in the process of rereading it, and I'm not seeing the same things this time.  I still find it entertaining.

Of course, unless you have experienced something like this, you will NEVER understand.

Pentecostal ! by Phage (2.00 / 0) #2 Tue Feb 13, 2007 at 04:13:10 AM EST
Bloody hell. My mother was Pentecostal and it always scared the living crap out of me.
I admit I'm very curious as to how your childhood was. Mine was somewhat less than average as her religion came first, which left my brother and I sans relatives, birthdays, holidays etc. Hence my poor social skills and associated introverted and geeky habits. She is no longer Pentecostal, but I haven't yet forgiven her for those long years.

My childhood revolved around going to church almost every night of the week.  I was a strange child.  I went to public schools and I think I scared the crap out of my peers.  I couldn't do the normal kid things...birthday parties, movies, slumber parties.   I couldn't cut my hair or wear pants.  Long skirts and bloused buttoned up to the neck.  The only reading I could do was the Bible.  We didn't have TV.

Why criticise her by anonimouse (2.00 / 0) #3 Tue Feb 13, 2007 at 07:29:33 AM EST
Faith is blind. If you demand proofs then you do not have faith.

"Angels and Demons" like "Da Vinci Code" is entertaining, but hardly a basis for a change in belief.
